Volunteer Assistant Coaches

Recommended Posts

I saw that J'den Cox is now volunteer assistant coach at Mizzou.

What is the deal with volunteer assistants? Are they really volunteers in that they get no pay? Or do they do other tasks for the university and get paid for that?

Some volunteers receive no pay because some are either finishing their degree or in a graduate program. This is the case for the smaller schools with very limited funds.

A mid grade volunteer is paid through fundraising only. Some are actually resident athletes attached to an RTC or have a sponsorship through Titan Mercury or NYAC. The salaries for these types of volunteers could be as low as 5 grand a year but I see a place like Cornell could fundraise 50k+ for this position.

Then you have the big boys where some schools actually pay for the volunteer...think Iowa, PSU, tOSU and OSU. They can still have a sponsorship or get other fundraising money. They are typically in the 50-up to 75 range if they are still competing a very good internationally.

Anyone who volunteers their time, especially when it involves helping others, deserves to get paid.  Take some of the bloated money allocated to football and basketball and use it to strengthen the budget for wrestling so these guys get paid in accordance with their time and effort.

If you expect to get paid then you aren't really "volunteering" now are you?
