Next new FS Stars for USA

Recommended Posts

We have a great deal of talent coming up through the age groups in FS.  Which guys who have not competed a lot on the senior levels do you think have the best chance to be  the first to collect senior medals.

I know it pointless speculation but my top 5 would be

1 - D Fix - I think he could break through next year and would be competitive right now.  Gilman will be tough to get by but it wouldn't surprise me.  Fix beat the Ukrainian bronze medalist in 2016 at the Jr tournament.

2 - G. Steveson - He's awfully close right now and he is at an age where his physical and technical abilities can increase rapidly.

3 & 4 - M Hall & Z Valencia - I expect they will both be competing at 79 kg next year.  Although Dake & AD are favored for now both of these guys are capable of stepping up and getting that spot.

5 - Yanni D - I just think he has a real feel for FS and I think by 2020 he will be in the mix for the 65kg spot.

S Lee didn't make the list because I don't think he gets by Gilman or Fix in the next few years.  Could be wrong but time will tell.

I don't know why Zahid is always given such lofty status. He's never won worlds to my recollection like Fix, Steveson, Hall, Lee, etc. yet he's tied for 3rd with Hall who's won 3 age level golds and above Yanni who at least has a cadet gold to his name.

Well he did take silver... are those not good anymore?  I rank Hall ahead of Zahid, but to pretend there's a massive gulf between them is pretty silly.  I also see Zahid having a smoother transition to 79kg, and particularly 86kg, than Hall.

I'd be okay putting zahid at or slightly above lee. Lee's title was at a kids weight class and he failed to make the cadet team at 55kg even. The competition and talent at 86kg is leaps and bounds ahead of what you see at 50kg.

100% correct. He has dominated a weight class with no real comp. those who expect domination in college are kidding themselves.

Gilman and fix would both rag doll him right now.

I'm going to add Kollin Moore to the list.  With his Jr. Bronze at 97kg, I'm hopeful that he darts for 92kg.  At 92kg, he will see Cox (most likely) as his primary competition.  Keep in mind that Kollin is NOT a freestyle specialist, and only started wrestling in this style in the last 2 years or so (or so I'm told).  Plus, his training partner is Kyle "Freaking" Snyder... yeah... THAT guy.  He will literally see the best P4P competition that the world can throw at him... DAILY.

So.. a future freestyle star?  Kollin Moore.  92kg.

1 Silver in how many tries vs. 3 Golds in 4 tries

In terms of results, there is a pretty significant difference. That's like comparing James Green to Jordan Burroughs.

Hasn't Valencia only gone twice to junior worlds, or is it three times now? wasn't hall's loss to somebody he had absolutely no business losing to? Will hall and Valencia both end up at 79 in the near future, or will zahid go 86 and take on taylor? Neither is starting at 79 either if dake is there anyways.

I think Hall and Valencia try to take on 79. If Dake is there, it's his spot, but I can't see either of them trying to go up to 86; they'd get horsed by DT just based on how massive he is. Hall and Taylor being affiliated may play a role, and Dake's tendency to coast by may be cause (however small and improbable) of an upset.

In terms of Hall and Valencia, they're both up there, with the edge given to Hall right now imo. They both are freestyle savvy, with styles almost tailor-made for it.

What's the long run, 2024? Dake is still pretty young himself keep in mind.

I hope it doesnt sound like I'm bashing lee, I think he's great. But there is a massive difference between junior level talent between 50kg and 86kg. All I was trying to say there.

So do you really not know how many tries?

Besides, everyone knows Hall is one of the biggest Jr 74's out there whereas Zahid is a severely undersized 86.

what does 86kg have to do with 50kg? Why not compare 50&57?
