Randy Lewis had a great career, but if he hadn't suffered the gruesome injury his senior year, and won it (not a lock, never know how the season would have played out for sure), he would have ended up as a 3 timer with a 2nd place finish as a freshman. That would have elevated him into even higher level as far as all time greats go.

I agree with post about Dustin Schlatter. I think CP Schlatter's career was impacted as well.

David Kjeldgaard from Oklahoma is another one who comes to mind.

Joe Russell

great example that is different than most already mentioned. most mentioned were able to achieve a certain level of success despite injury or at least prior to injury. Joe never had the chance at the collegiate level to give it a go and sure had the potential to be something special. as is he has made his impact through coaching.

Matt Mcdonough was 1 2 1 and then DNP as a senior.  If he doesn't get hurt as a senior he potentially ends as a 4 time B10 and NCAA Finalist and 3 time B10 and NCAA champion.  That would put him discussions for GOAT, at least as a lightweight.

Just to extend this a little further -- Escobedo won as a sophmore, then hurt his shoulder badly as a junior and Nickerson won the title in 2009.    Nickerson was also hampered greatly by injuries including a torn labrum, and a less-than-healthy Nickerson and Escobedo both placed as seniors but missed out on their shot on a second title in 2010, allowing Matt McD to win his first.  Robles wins in 2011, and McD repeats in 2012.  Then in 2013 McD blows out his shoulder and doesn't even place, allowing Delgado to win his first.  Delgado repeats in 2014, and then in 2015 when going for his 3rd title, blows out his shoulder and can't even finish the season.

Now its not guaranteed that any of these guys were for sure going to win if they hadn't gotten injured.  There was a lot of talent floating around this weight, and we never got an answer to who would have won between 100% healthy Nickerson and Escobedo (Nickerson did beat Esco twice back in 2007 during Escos torn labrum season, then lost a rematch in 2010 when both were banged up) Also how badly did Esco's shoulder really hamper him as a senior? Could Delgado as a soph have taken out a healthy McD as a senior?  We'll never know.

Still, in the last decade we have 4 guys at 125 pounds who were returning champs and lost their chance at another title due to shoulder injuries.

yeah how many knee surgeries did that guy have?

Cool article about the beginning of his many knee struggles, in high school.

Not to derail this thread but what if Jordan Burroughs doesn't get his medical redshirt his senior year. From my understanding if he would of wrestled a couple more matches he would of been denied his medical redshirt.

Does JB go on to do what he has done in his international career, or does he get a job with his college education?

Injured lungs?

Shoulders? Andrew was R12 as a freshman and Dylan was 3rd at NCAAs. After their injuries they never were the same, hence this very topic. Remember that Dylan beat James Green twice that season as well as split matches with Jason Welch. Edited by BigTenFanboy
