OSU vs Minny

Recommended Posts

Lizak is awesome on top.  The first backpoints was a bit of Picc being dumb and thinking he could get a reversal. For the 2 count Picc was in cover up and hide mode and just got ripped over.  Then after the ride he put on you could tell Lizak was ready to win in neutral even after getting destroyed there in the 1st.

The rest of the Minnesota team just has zero offense.  McKee has counter offense and the other 8 guys had neither offense nor counter offense.  They get in a good stance and go straight to the edge on the whistle and then circle in well to make sure no stalling gets called.  They never led in the 1st 3 matches but still took a total of 2 shots.  They look like drill partners who are going hard to make their teammates really work for their takedowns.

141 Heil was Heil.  He won a match late that he should have won early.  One interesting note is that Thorn took a shot and Heil sprawled and tried to go behind.  Last year he would have given up the leg and started rolling around.  Good to see him move away from that.

149 Geo looked pretty good.

157 Blaylock walked forward while Short walked backwards for 7 minutes.  Blaylock nearly scored a few times but he's just not physically strong enough to score when he gets to legs.  He finally scored in OT

165 Rogers comes forward and tries to score for 6 minutes while Wanzek tries to keep it tied and win late.  After Rogers scores Wanzek attacks hard in the last minute while Rogers gasses and poorly defends until the buzzer.  Neither guy looked great.

174 Jacobe Smith throws Pfarr on his back twice in the first period and Pfarr continues to lock up top whenever Smith wants to.  Nobody scores in the last 4 minutes and Smith is visibly upset after the dual.  Smith has talent and offense but doesn't manage a match that well yet on this level.

184 Moore scores a sweet ankle pick early and threatens a few other times.  Moore gasses late and gives up a TD that wasn't a TD while he's ankle picking the guy.  Then he finishes the ankle pick for the reversal and rides him out for the win.  Eggum challenges a missed locked hands and Haggerty seriously takes about 10 minutes to review and say call stands.  No assistant ref for some reason.

197 Marsden scores a few slide bys, creative backpoints from top, and generally outscrambles a game but uncreative Steveson for a 10-3 win.

285 White scores a TD early and then not much happens until he seals it with another TD late.

125 was awesome to watch and terrible as an OSU fan.

133 I don't know if anyone has better offensive technique from neutral than Kaid Brock.  The problem is he seems to fall apart the moment someone turns the match physical and his technique doesn't work.  I used to think he'd get past this, but now I'm not so sure.

OSU was not great overall, but Minnesota wrestled to keep it close and had little interest in winning.  If I had to guess I'd say OSU finishes lower than 3rd.

One thing that’s missing from past Gopher teams is the hard-nosed, in your face aggressive style guys like Reiter, Kish, Hartung, Konrad would bring. All it took was somebody getting tossed into the scoreboard to derail the opponent’s game plan. And it wasn’t just MN. OkState, Iowa, Iowa State all had those guys.

Hard nosed without athleticism and techniques isn't worth much in this day and age. The OSU guys didn't need to toss anyone into the scoring table to dominate last night and Gable Steveson won't need to do things like that to excel at Minnesota.

Minny got crushed on a road trip weekend against a top opponent.  Okie State has really worked on that slide-by and other teams had better beware.  Minny does not have a great team but I'm sure they'll improve.  Hell, Minny wasn't even the biggest disappointment this weekend.  Michigan was.

Big 12 doesn’t assign second officials. Big Ten now has one mat official and one replay official.

That replay was brutally long.  If he had a 2nd official he could have done the official thing where they pretend to talk it over and consult each other and then make the original call anyways.  Instead he had to go look at a video screen for 10+ minutes before saying his original call was right.
