PSU vs. Lehigh, Sunday Dual

Recommended Posts

Match notes are up on PSU website, so here are the match ups:

#1 PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (3-0, 0-0 B1G) vs. #7 LEHIGH MOUNTAIN HAWKS (*3-0)

125 Devin Schnupp Fr. vs. #5 Darian Cruz Sr.
133 #18 Corey Keener Sr. vs. #3 Scotty Parker Jr.

141 Jered Cortez Jr. vs. Luke Karam Fr.
149 #1 Zain Retherford Sr. vs. Jon Mele Sr. or Cortlandt Schuyler Jr.
157 #1 Jason Nolf Jr. vs. Ian Brown Jr.
165 #1 Vincenzo Joseph So. vs. #15 Gordon Wolf Jr.
174 #2 Mark Hall So. vs. #5 Jordan Kutler So.

184 #1 Bo Nickal Jr. vs. #4 Ryan Preisch Jr.
197 #11 Anthony Cassar So. or Matt McCutcheon Sr. vs. Jake Jakobsen Fr. or Chris Weiler Fr.
285 #3 Nick Nevills Jr. vs. #14 Jordan Wood Fr.

Individual rankings are InterMat, team ranking is InterMat TPI

I have Lehigh winning by FALL at 125, by DEC at 133, and then 141 is a toss up with slight edge to PSU Cortez. Penn State wins everything else with a load of bonus points.

174 is also an interesting matchup. Hall is definitely the favorite but Kutler should give him a match

184 is interesting as well, given how difficult it is to score on Preisch. Bo should win it though.

HVWT is compelling. Wood is turning into a pretty offensive heavyweight. Nevills has looked excellent so far and I would be shocked if he lost, but I expect a competitive match.

Looking forward to this one. No chance PSU loses the dual overall, but they could lose 4/10.

All of that is possible. Lehigh has a very good squad this year, but hard to pick anyone from 149 thru Hwt. as PSU is the favorite at all those weights. But you are correct, there are some that are close enough that they can go Lehigh's way, especially on their campus.

I'll take the over on Lehigh winning two bouts.

They are pretty much locks at 2 weights, a toss up at 1 weight, and they have a decent chance at maybe three other weights. The odds would favor the over, so you would make a good bet with that one. After what they did to Michigan they should be pretty excited about their chances against Penn State.

I will be the first to officially call Kutler over Hall. Just so I can make the claim if it actually happens :)

I'm 2nd in line on this.  If any of these upsets are going to happen, I see this as most likely.

I don't think Lehigh is a lock at 133, definitely favored, but not a lock.

you are all assuming both teams have all of their line up wrestling. I would not expect that?

Who would be out? I’ve seen some rumblings about about Cenzo being out. Are you aware of others?

Missed that one.

To clarify, you're predicting Kutler wins by a point, not saying he should be favored, right?

Reason would suggest that Hall should be favored, based on ranking and last year's post-season.  But if they wrestled ten times, I could see if being a 5-5 or 6-4 split.  Kutler wins by a point this weekend.

Of the current 'big three at 174',  I think Kutler matches up best against Hall.  I could see Valencia's and BoJo's size being too much for him.

imho, Kutler would have been top four at 157 last year had he not outgrew the class.

Career records:  Kutler is 19-1; Hall is 39-3

Also, this dual will be held at a sold out PPL Center making it the largest crowd in Lehigh history. Not on campus.

I'd love to see Preisch pull off the upset as well.

Ditto that.  Preisch has shown the ability to wrestle well against top competition (knocked off #1 Epperly in the VaTech dual last year).  But if money were on the line, I don't know that I can make the bet against Nickal.

Cruz WBF

Parker MAJ

Karam Dec

Kutler Dec

Zain WBF

Nolf TF

Joseph Dec

Nickal Dec

Cassar Dec

Nevills Dec

PSU 23-16

I think PSU gets bonus points out of Nickal, Cassar and Nevills. I think Hall pins Kutler. I think Cortez beats Karam comfortably as well. I'm rather surprised you are picking Kutler over Hall.

Is Jon Mele a relative of Levi Mele? Was wondering because I think Levi was considering at Lehigh and Northwestern (and Stanford) before landing at NU.

Not unless it's a distant relative. I never heard anyone mention it.

And I'm FB friends with both and they don't show up on each other's lists.

To my knowledge... Jon is not related to Levi "the Stormin' Mormon" Mele, who had to leave Lehigh due to financial issues following his mission.

Jon is from New Jersey; Levi is from Utah.

Interesting tidbit:  Mike Grey beat Levi Mele in the 2006 Senior Nationals at 125.  Both were committed to Lehigh out of HS; neither ended up matriculating.
