The 2018 Yarygin (Jan 26-28)

Recommended Posts

Crazy that the Cuban 86 was so close despite their awful training conditions. Had he been born elsewhere he would have won here by tech and have many more accolades.

When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose.  You could argue that Taylor wrestling all those years in folkstyle was a much worse training situation than the difference in quality of facilities.

Nope. The difference in opportunities is so vast that there is no comparison.

DT wins by pin in the finals.   He has been on an undefeated roll internationally of late:  World Cup, World Clubs Cup, Yarygin, etc.   Beating lots of ranked guys including in this event, the Cuban (recently ranked in top ten), Yasar, the Turk (recently ranked 4th), and a Russian (the junior World Champion).

Great tournament for Taylor, probably not the toughest tournament in the world anymore after UWW had there way but still plenty tough.

I’m reading this to imply that if UWW didn’t have their tourney stacking rules, this tourney would have been harder for Taylor to win.

Seems for this to be true, you have to conclude that Russia didn’t put the top guys they would have wanted in this tourney.

If their top 3 guys via their own qualification process were there, having the next tier down would not have added much trouble for the eventual champion.

Or do you think having 4-6 in the pecking order from Russia been more of a challenge than 1-3?

Snyder winning 4-1 with minute to go.

Russian seems to say his ear hurts. Injury time. Goes to corner .. Lies down on back breathing deep.

Hilarious. Clear lung time out to me. Snyder throws up his shoulders and arms ...

And restart and Snyder wins 4-1!

The Russian had to take a lung timeout after supposedly getting poked in the eye when Snyder was behind him and took him out of bounds.  Still didn't work.  He put everything into that whizzer position throw and couldn't get it.  If he wouldn't have been allowed to take that injury time Snyder would have beaten him much worse than 4-1.

Looked like ear, actually lungs. The way Snyder as been scouted is to do elbow passes and control him with ties. Hope to win close 2-1 or something like that.. Good in theory unless you gas which also happened in the semi's with another lungs time out. For his part looked like his timing was off and he couldn't get his shots off cleanly. Still, he is just so good he wins even when off a bit.

DT got to a crab ride position for the fall in the semis and the final. Seems like he has found a way to effectively integrate folk style top technique into freestyle. I'm really interested to see if other guys can pull this off. Dake was a good crab rider and should be taking notes.

This tournament was widely considered the toughest tournament in the world, I just don't think it was the meat grinder like years past. My opinion, if you think it remains the toughest tournament your welcome to your opinion.

Overall, great performance by the US contingent.  Finally we send a serious team and not just 3-4 guys out for a challenge.  Sure, there were a few bodies along for the ride, but a better overall effort than in the past.  More of this in the future.
