Remaining Undefeated Wrestlers (as of Jan. 19, 2018)

Recommended Posts

Unofficial bouts, that do not count on their records.

sure its not part of official record for NCAA seeds & RPI, but still can be considered by coaches in their ranking and for Hodge.  However, this is simply a forum thread about "undefeated wrestlers" (no official v unofficial criteria given) and it was a match and they did lose, thus a poster can have the opinion that they are not undefeated.

What about losses in the practice room?  Do those count too?  How do we know if guys who we think are undefeated haven't lost to team mates?

are those pre announced invents with tickets sold, national broadcasts and results posted following?

but perhaps we should also count as a loss any time a wrestler ducks the competition?

but I do agree, if the thread is about who will go into the NCAA tournament with an "official" undefeated record, then they are still on that list

As you said above - as a fan you can do what you want to.  But the rest of us might not go along.

FWIW, Cruz is still undefeated by my scorecard.

Aren't some early season wrestle offs (intra squad duals) done this way?

Article (below) on disappearance of undefeated guys in the last few weeks.  Who will be the last man (men) standing?  My quick guess list from strongest to least likelihood would be:

1. Retherford

2. Nickal

3.  Valencia

4. Martinez

5.  Hall

6.  Suriano

7. Cruz

8.  Coon

9. Kemmerer (depends if Nolf wrestles of course)

10. Hidlay

11.  Marinelli

12.  Lewis

13. Renda

14. McFadden

15. Zacherl

You may want to take note that Cruz has been #1 in each of the Coaches' Rankings this season...  they don't seem to consider the all-star dual to be a significant event.

18-January:

1 Darian Cruz Lehigh EIWA

2 Nick Suriano Rutgers Big Ten
3 Sean Fausz NC State ACC
4 Ethan Lizak Minnesota Big Ten
5 Spencer Lee Iowa Big Ten

9-February:

1 Darian Cruz Lehigh EIWA
2 Nick Suriano Rutgers Big Ten
3 Spencer Lee Iowa Big Ten
4 Sean Fausz NC State ACC
5 Nicholas Piccininni Oklahoma St. Big 12

Down goes previously undefeated Renda to Zavatsky, 3-2.   Only 14 undefeated guys remaining.

NC State wins an OT match at 285 to win the ACC.

well not really 14, but yeah we know what you mean. ;)

Three more undefeated guys go down today: Zacherl at 141; Kemmerer at 157; and Marinelli at 165. Only 11 left.

Interesting that the eleven remaining includes the 6th place finisher at B1G, Nick Sorry-ano.

In the unlikely event that Sorryano were to win in Cleveland, would he be the first NCAA champ to go undefeated and not win a conference title? Never mind, Rutgers guys don't win national titles.

Coon goes down this past weekend. There are only 10 undefeated guys left at 6 weights. Penn State has 3. No other team has more than 1. After NCAAs, there will be at most 6 wrestlers left. In all likelihood, the Hodge will come from that group. Perhaps the most likely are Retherford, IMar, Nickal, Hall, Cruz, and Valencia (in that order if I had to bet) -- Valencia being the only one that hasn't already won at least one title.
