Gavin may have been boring, but he was very sound fundamentally. He kept very strong positioning and was tough to score on. He absolutely would have had a solid chance to win.

Also, Pucillo was very solid that year. He did beat Varner to win.

I'd take Scott and Davis for sure.

I'd say Perry and Leen are slightly favored.

I'd give Escobedo, Metcalf, Gavin, and Fox varying chances as underdogs.

I'd give little to no chance for Jaggers and Pucillo.  Jaggers I could see beating anyone at 141 but I don't think he could beat all of them.  He seemed so fragile physically by the end and that weight is a meat grinder.

Not to hijack, but if you go back 11 years I think BAskren wins 174, 184, and 197.

174 for sure and almost certainly 197.  184 would be interesting.  It's tough to beat a guy in scrambles when he is much longer and has more leverage.  I'm not saying Askren couldn't beat Nickal, just that it's not a great matchup for him.  I think Nickal is waaay better than Kish was.

How about Zain vs. senior year Lance Palmer? Granted, Palmer wasn't the most technical wrestler but his strength and physicality made him so tough to turn or be on bottom. I'm having a hard time thinking of an opponent Zain has wrestled like that, except for maybe Molinaro in freestyle.

Zain wrestles NOBODY like Metcalf had to. Metcalf would have beat Zain similar to the way he beat Pico. Low scoring controlled match

Disagree.  When Metcalf won NCAAs, he was middle of the pack on the ladder in the country.  Zain is the best wrestler in the country at the weight, and it's not because he is especially good at freestyle.

125 - I think there are several at 125 this year that could beat Escobedo from 2008

133 - Coleman Scott would win, but Gross would give him trouble.

141 - gotta take Jaggers, nobody really stands out at 141 this year (crazy for a weight with a 2 time NCAA champ)

149 - Zain would beat Metcalf, but Metcalf would get a takedown or two in the first period.

157 - Nolf would major Leen

165 - Joseph over Perry

174 - Hall over Gavin

184 - Nickal over Pucillo

197 - Davis over Moore , possibly by bonus

HWT - Snyder bonuses Fox
