Dan gable Iowa era

Recommended Posts

Practices were organized with specific teaching goals. His attention to fitness development was innovative. Those that lacked intensity didn’t last long. There was drilling, situational wrestling, and live wrestling. The amount of each depended on the timeline. There was no touchy-feely stuff which characterizes the needs of today’s wrestlers. And never, never, were his wrestlers instructed to face slap or head butt as a technique to indicate to their opponents that “they were going at you.”

nothing but buddy carries up steps, wind sprints, and 10 mile runs. and throwing apples at guys who were slacking.

now while these things did happen....as others said, attention to detail and organized practices with specific goals. he also was good at reading his team and knew when to keep pushing the intensity, and when to back it off. sometimes on an individual basis (gave Alger a few days off one year before B1G tourney)

Couldn't get by with ritual sacrifice these days. Too many snow flakes..

One thing that helped with his reputation after the Olympics was working for head Coach Gary Kurdelmeier who put him in charge of the room. A head coach who had confidence in the new guy and did not reign him in paid dividends even before Gable took over.

Many head coaches would not want an assistant who would 'outshine' them.

I thought it was a simple schudule:

wrestle Gable for 7 minutes,

drill on your own for 63 min (while the other 9 starters take a turn)

wrestle Gable for 7 minutes,

drill for 63 minutes,

repeat until Gable is tired (never happens), or end of day

rest

repeat again next day

Don't let Dan Gable's intense practices distract you from the the fact that in 1996, Abbas Jadidi scored two points with a leg lace but was only given one point while wrestling in the Olympic finals against his old nemesis, Kurt "It's True" Angle.

Jadidi's two point leg lace was the first thing that popped in my head just as I clicked this thread.
