Suriano to 133 next year

Recommended Posts

Would have loved to see him this year at 125. Piccinni didn't exactly work out all that well this season.

Piccinni lost to the 1st and 4th place finisher. Brutal draw. Not like he was losing to slouches. He won the matches he was supposed to and lost two where he wasn’t favored.

Picc lost to Lee and Lizak on his way to a 26-5 record.  He is bad on bottom and ran into the 2 guys who have repeatedly exploited that.  Aside from those two he was 26-1 with an all-star win over Cruz.  If the bracket falls any other possible way he is an AA.  I don't think before the season anybody thought Picc was better than either of those guys and after the season we know he isn't.  There is no shame in that.

Some of this

Kids used to be willing to go to Stillwater, get locked in saunas, recruited over, have wrestle offs every week, cut unreasonable amounts of weight and be treated like a piece of beef.  Smith is old school tough love guy.  But you went anyway because you got to wrestle for Okie State

1-Cael has changed that.  Not too many dodgeball games going on in Stillwater.

2- Today's athlete less likely to respond to that approach

3- More options/ more kids wanting to be THE guy at a smaller program

The narrative that the OSU guys cut a ton is hilarious.  They have had just as many guys bump up as stay down.  The only guys to cut hard in the last 5 years were doing so because it was the only way to make the team.  This year's team didn't have a single guy with a hard cut and they rarely wrestled a match where they were the bigger guy (Weigel the only exception).  You look around college wrestling at some of the huge cuts and yet it's OSU people love to talk about as cutters.

It's not at all.  Everything else you said is very relevant.  Smith is a generation behind in some ways and definitely has no patience for kids who need patience.  That is more and more kids these days and I don't see how you change that.

But it has nothing to do with weight cutting.  There is the same or more weight cutting at every program.

Honestly Smith's own son who he could force into any cut is the ultimate test subject.  Their odds of winning are small with Joe at 157 and microscopic with him up since there is no replacement at 157.  Everything in the world says get him to cut for the team like Nato did this year.  Let's see what happens.

Why is 2nd place so bad?  Suriano shouldn't change a thing except to try and gameplan against Spencer.  Suggesting that he goes up a weight class to avoid someone only creates doubt in his own mind.

If a senior in his last year of competing in college, in his own home town, with a chance to win a team title with a solid performance, who was #1 ranked for a while, and has won an NCAA title before, with a VERY good coaching staff, and has won MANY big matches before ....can't come up with a gameplan to beat a freshman thats really just getting to 100% physically.....then gets totally DOMINATED basically in the rubber match....Suriano can have the gameplan of the century, if Lee's at 100% it's likely going to get worse for him. I'm pretty sure Tomasello would have beaten Suriano too fwiw.

Or Ronnie Lott.

Belitnikoff is a funny citation. Being a WR on the smallish side, there used to be a story that Raider teammates would throw Fred against the wall to see if he would stick.

.... Don Meredith said about Walt Garrison "if you need 5 yards, Walt will get you 5 ..... if you need 20 yards, Walt will get you 5" ....

Walt's grandson had a nice career at SPGraham, and was at Okie State for a bit.....

I agree the generation coming through now generally needs to be treated and coached (and taught) differently.

I do get that.

I have trouble accepting that and that is a severe weakness failure I have in my character (especially being a crusty old professor who deals with 18-23 year olds regularly)

He is muscular but not a huge 125. There are many 133 pounders that could present match-up problems other than Gross.

What are his five biggest collegiate victories?

Is it possible that he’s just not champion material?

He has beaten 3 previous NCAA finalists - Cruz (2X), Lizak and Moisey.

Last year the title was "stolen/robbed" from him due to Cael mismanagement.

What is the excuse this year?

Suriano won't win an NCAA title at his current weight.

Do you really think 133 will be any different?

Very good, but a career second placer.

Brands robbed him by pulling Lee’s redshirt.

Likely to see consolation semis at 133.

Concur with first post.  Felt this way back in Feb after watching a few Lee matches.  Knew he would beat Suriano.  I'm season ticket holder for RU and big fan of Nick but knew he wasn't the hammer that Lee is.  Believe Lee will go on to be the next Retherford.

Not sure how things would be different if Nick didn't hurt his ankle last year.  One thing it did do is cast him into a light of controversy and thus he's been getting a ton of press and maybe was over hyped.

He's definitely AA but needs more strength, size and more in his arsenal to separate himself.  Everyone is awesome in the top 4 to 8 but to be #1 year in and out you have to have that 'it' factor that separates you and puts fear into the guys who face you.

C’mon Bocon. Get outta here with the Smitty doesn’t cut his guys hard crap.... He didn’t say ALL guys.

Who cut hard this year?  Who cut hard in the past 5 years when they could have had a spot in another weight.  The last time they cut a guy for the sake of it was junior year Jordan Oliver and they probably ruined him by doing so.  Since then they are not a team that cuts a ton.
