is there any "State Championship" that started before 1928?

Recommended Posts

As a budding historian, I am curious to know what states have held official "State Championships" for the longest time, I am guessing Oklahoma and Iowa, but would like to know years. Here is what I do know, Utah started holding state tournament for their high school season in 1938, Wyoming 1947, California in 1973 (which is a little puzzling considering their population and caliber of wrestling) I also know that the NCAA starting holding division 1 championships in 1928, but is that when the first championships of any kind were started, or is there some particular state like Ok, or Penn, or Ohio that goes back even further than 1928?

If any of you have any inside scoop, please comment, it would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

The 2013 Oklahoma High School Wrestling Championship program lists state champions beginning in 1922. There was also a Norman tournament held until 1932, it was an "invitational" that was a preview to the state tournament.

^^^Here's a statement from about pg 37 of the 1928 NCAA Wrestling Guide, which probably was written in 1927, indicates Ohio, for example, was one of the first-

State or sectional high school wrestling meets are sanctioned in

Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, California,

Ohio, and Massachusetts. Well organized boys' clubs throughout

the country, such as Hull House in Chicago, and St. Thomas' in

New York, encourage and promote wrestling for boys. Y.M.C.A.

organizations throughout the country also give wrestling instruction

and promote the sport. Last year the first state meet was held under

the auspices of Ohio Wesleyan University, at Delaware, Ohio, and

proved a very successful affair.

The first state tournament in Iowa was 1921, but the first sanctioned event was in 1926.

The winning coach in 1926? Adolph Rupp. Yes, Kentucky basketball legend Adolph Rupp.

Ottumwa was a pretty good wrestling school back in those days. It still produces state qualifiers and place winners from time to time, yet is primarily known as a basketball school these days. Weird to think of it at one time having better wrestling.

Adolph Rupp was the high school coach at Marshalltown so not sure why Ottumwa was brought up???
