guessing Gable is hard to beat for the 3 year era. 14-1, 12 pins, 2 reg dec.

16-1, 13 falls, 1 major.

Had two pigtail matches in there.

Using today's scoring (no bye points/R64), I get:

1968 - 16 placing, 5 advancement (pigtail), 7 bonus (3 falls + 1 major)

1969 - 16 placing, 4 advancement, 10 bonus (5 falls)

1970 - 12 placing, 5 advancement (pigtail), 10 bonus (5 falls)

85 points

28.33 points/year

Sanderson, comparatively: 64 placing; 16 advancement; 27.5 bonus (7 falls, 5 techs, 6 majors)

107.5 points

26.88 points/year

And 2-year guy Chris Taylor: 32 placing; 8 advancement; 14 bonus (7 falls)

54 points

27.00 points/year

no, they weren't as big.

there are several years where there are small brackets and some 32's..

Back in  the 40s?

From about '67 on they were same or bigger ('71 first year of qualification might have been more like 30-32). They were around avg 36 up until late 80s early 90s when they phased out d2-d3. After that they averaged 33 same as now.

this was posted on that 2014 thread...goes to my point of fewer wrestlers, even tho it says points were upped.

they had fewer matches...

TRIVIA - Obviously we go thru point-scoring changes as time goes by, plus we're in an era where wrestler can go to NCAA's four times. Anyway, one year when Dan Gable was wrestling for Iowa State, NCAA upped the point scoring. That year at the NCAA's Gable became the second wrestler to tally at least 20 points for his team at an NCAA tournament. Who was the first guy to hit 20? (Bit of a trick question in that it happened at the same NCAA tournament.)

Mid sixties and earlier, yes. By late sixties similar. My first championship at UWash every wt had 2 or 3 pigtails on a 32 man bracket. NCAA limited participation or qualification at some point partly because of the size was causing problems as consolation participation expanded. I don’t thing we had full double elimination until mid/late eighties. Gable/Owings 142lb bracket had 42, as did 150. 126,134,158 had 8+ pigtails. Edited by ccrider55
