Final 2018 WrestleStat Rankings

Recommended Posts

Here are the final rankings. Remember, these rankings may not necessarily directly reflect the placement of each wrestler at the NCAA tournament; it's still an accumulation of their career rankings. For example, Spencer Lee is still #2 at 125 while Tomasello is #1.

This offseason the rankings process is going to get modified to help accommodate some of the issues that were found this season. The main problem identified is when there are wrestlers that have a wide range of "best wins" vs "bad losses".

WrestleStat is going to receive some major upgrades this offseason, including a re-design of the entire site layout. Stay tuned to see all of the changes.

Lastly, any and all suggestions, site problems, constructive criticism is welcomed.

Several weights where the champ is nowhere near being #1??? I don't get it.

It's because they use an algorithm. It's like trying to gamble at a casino with a purely mathematical system. In theory it work, but in actuality there's no surefire real way to predict outcomes based on previous actions.

I know all about the algorithm. I obviously do not believe in algorithms for things like this. I would think, at least, that a premium would be placed on where the wrestlers finish at NCAA's.

@andegre, You do fantastic work! My only suggestion is defaulting the rankings to starters only and making that a permanent link (right now it is the same url for starters only vs all).

@EveryoneElse, show some appreciation and punch that donate button. We've all spent more time than you care to admit looking at results.

While that is the "Human" thing to do it is not necessarily the correct thing to do. It is obvious you like personal opinion form nobodies with nothing more to do than post their opinions based upon personal biases. I prefer this methodology as I like the "career points" aspect.

I do wish the default was to starters only but that is a very minor issue since I have the option available.

Wrestlestat is great data but you really need to do a couple changes.

1. Don't put so much weight on previous accomplishments. There are a number of cases where a young wrestler demolishes a veteran and still gets ranked lower because of legacy points from previous years. There are lots of examples of this but look no further than Tomasello and Spencer Lee.

2. When someone is out and not wrestling due to injury, the formula needs to take that into account and drop their ranking or remove them. Ashnault as #1 all year made wrestlestat look ridiculous. This issue goes back to Jesse Delgado and beyond.

I am with KTG. Love wrestlestat for the results based data, but do not[prefer any algorithm based rankings. Not this one or SHP's Index. The final ones wouldn't be agreed with by very many people, and the rankings are miles off at the start of the year.

Rasheed at #2 is whack, for example. How can he be ranked ahead of Moore who takes him down with ease, and ahead of Macchiavello who just beat him and won NCAA's? How can Spencer Lee still be behind NaTo when he literally manhandled him? Just my personal pov.

I don't even look at or consider the rankings from this site. I do however love the site for its abundance of data that is easy to access.

The rankings are dumb, but the site is a great resource. Andre should just focus on what he does well, and not create algorithms that have no basis in reality.

WrestleStat is an incredible resource and I am very thankful for @andegre's service. D1 wrestling may feel like it's shrinking sometimes, but there's still a lot of wrestlers to keep track of, and a mountain of data that comes along with it. I can see WS turning into the Synergy Tech of wrestling if (when) the moneyball era arrives to the sport, if programs aren't already using it for that purpose... analytics, instant scouting reports, breakdowns/evals, plus all the records & scores and fantasy stuff. Analytics are amazing.

Until you eliminate the career results component of these rankings, then they'll continue to be lacking.  I enjoy going to your site for its other capabilities, but as far as rankings go, Yianni 6th at 141 is all that needs to be said.

Just wanted to give a brief update on the WrestleStat rankings.

We've done over 50 tweaks and simulation runs. Going by the "Rank the Rankers" scoring model (please someone post a link to that results thread, I can't find it), the latest version of the algorithm would have WrestleStat in 1st place with 569 points!!!

We are going to continue with some more tweaks/modifications and simulation runs, but this is EXTREMELY promising and exciting!

Edit: found that post http://board.themat.com/index.php?/topic/17451-rank-the-rankers/?hl=%2Brank+%2Brankers

And here's a link to the post that contains the scoring model: http://board.themat.com/index.php?/topic/17133-rank-the-rankers/?hl=%2Brank+%2Brankers

How can you claim he likes opinion when he is asking why the actual results aren't reflected?

I love the site as a whole and I value the rankings for what they are, but it cracks me up how the second someone uses math we pretend it's objective.  As long as a human is making the formula, it's not objective.  Someone is deciding how to weigh margin of victory, whether to weigh postseason more than regular season, how much to weigh recency vs career.  All of these things are human decisions.  The only thing more objective is that once you decide on a formula that reflects what you think is most important, the formula is applied objectively across every guy.  So eye test biases are removed but it's still all based on opinion.

That doesn't make these rankings worth less or more than other rankings, but it means that these are offering a certain perspective just like with every set of rankings.  So I value these rankings for what they show (loose comparison of career achievement).

And it is absolutely the best wrestling website in the world.
