What did only Joseph and Diakomihalis have in common at the NCAAs?

Recommended Posts

They both won.

They both beat a 2x Returning Champ.

They both were seeded 3rd.

The second one is pretty good (although Martinez wasn't a returning champ), but actually not what I was looking for.  The first and last were each accomplished ten times in the tournament.

Looking for something else.  Not sure how often it has occurred in the past.

Martinez was  2x Returning champ. He wasn't a defending champ.

Just like Nato and MyMar were returning champs, but not defending champs.

Does it have to do with the last guys who won titles for their respective schools in their respective weight classes also being Hodge Trophy winners?

Kyle Dake won a title at 141 as a freshman at Cornell and eventually won the Hodge.

David Taylor won a title at 165 as a sophomore at Penn St and won the Hodge.

Ok Kehlner... whats the verdict?

They were the only wrestlers to beat the #1 and #2 seeds in their respective weight classes.

Cory Clark did it in 2017, as did Joseph again.  Nobody in 2016.  Not common, but not unheard of.

Ohio State's three four-time All-Americans who graduate together aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand...

True, but I didn't include I was referring to the finals. KTG has one of them, the other one....well this isn't nearly as difficult to figure out as OP. I was on a long bus ride and bored.

As mentioned first time all ACC final

First time five defending champs from same team return to the finals.

(Could be first time six defending champs all together return to finals.... be interesting to look up)
