Ashnault 6th year

Recommended Posts

Agree with Lee. Everyone was concerned whether he would be big enough for 125 a year ago based on his worlds weights.

Disagree with Suriano and Gross. Suriano is a 3 position wrestler that can take Gross down, get off the bottom (really all it takes to win) and ride (Gross isn't great on bottom either).

Suriano will probably get ridden by Gross, but he can win the TD battle. It’s also possible Tariq is better than both if he continues his exponential improvement. Edited by Billyhoyle

A seventh year should damn already have a Bachelors degree.  Even a sixth year should be able to demonstrate that he is taking the one or two course he needs for his degree. (obviously this does not include military guys or OTC

My point has more to do with (1) when did the injury occur; and (2) how long did they wait to have the surgery to ensure he'd be out for the entire season?

... but maybe he had to get over the Zane/Heil-itis before going under the knife?

Obviously you are speculating out of ignorance of the situation.  He injured the shoulder in June at the 2017 University Nationals during the round of 16 and med forfeited out.  He had the shoulder surgery as soon after.  Then he had his knee repaired, the injury he sustained his redshirt freshman year that kept off the mat for 3.5 months of that year (mid Nov through March). (Yes, he AA'd three times with a bum knee.) With the two injuries, he missed 100% of 2 seasons out of 5 (Opens do not count toward NCAA eligibility) which under the NCAA rules (+70% of 2 seasons) qualifies for a medical hardship waiver.

As for him walking around okay in Cleveland, the knee was in rehab as well as the shoulder.  By chance was he walking on his hands?  .....want a laundry list of wrestlers whose careers ended after the second shoulder injury?  You can have your knees cut 10 times, but your probability of a successful recovery as a wrestler after two shoulder surgeries is near nil. You can wrestle with a knee brace that manages the range of motion; ask Nolf and Lee.  You can't manage the range of motion for your shoulder and wrestle successfully.Your shoulders are your most valuable asset, besides maybe your head and lungs. Pick a position, every move on the mat is reliant on your shoulder health.

Yeah, Ashnault was gambling that he would get the 6th year.  His goals are beyond the NCAA and coming back too soon and suffering a recurrence would likely end any aspirations of making the World Team.

Agree with Tariq. But his NCAA was rather reminiscent of Jack's freshman year.
