Jon_Kozak 228 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Reports are that Gable Steveson will be wrestling seniors at the US Open. With all the hype, what will he place? Right now he’s ranked behind Gwiz, Bradley, Nelson, Rey, and Telford. Thinking all of these guys will give him trouble but especially Bradley and Rey. I’ll pick him to finish 3rd. de4856 360 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Well, I hope he does show up, I will be eagerly awaiting to see his matches. I have no idea about well he will do, but I hope he does great, if for no other reason he will hopefully add depth to this weight class. Even if he can't dethrone Gwiz, he should still be able to push him, and in doing so, the pair of them will be better off for it, along with our other top heavyweights. spladle 179 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 I will believe when I see it. Until then, it is unnecessary hype. 1 stp reacted to this
Axe_Spartan 197 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 I still think he is the next big thing in the 125kg division, but who knows? Let's see how he performs at the US Open.
spladle 179 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 He could very well be the next big thing, I just do not believe he will wrestle seniors this year.
de4856 360 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Well, maybe Gable goes to the US Open, with the mind set of testing the waters. So I guess it becomes about how he does. If he does really well, he probably continue to pursue a berth on the Senior team. If he can't get by the top Seniors or Gwiz, maybe he goes Juniors again this summer. TobusRex 1,848 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 So what would be a good placement for Gable, given his youth? 3rd? 4th? 6th? Just curious.

Getting wins over any of the top 5 senior hvwts would be very impressive for an 18 year old kid just graduating HS. Top 5 would be a very good showing. LJB 1,482 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Gable is the best athlete at heavy right now... him winning the open would not surprise me even a little...
iGranby 175 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Gwiz is a tough ask. With that being said, I wouldnt be too surprised if he won it. Also, I do believe Logan was the last high schooler to place. He was 3rd as a jr and 5th as a senior I believe?
Alwayswrestling 195 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 I will have to see it to believe in Gable winning the US Open. BTW I will be there as a fan! 1 herma48852 reacted to this
Cletus_Tucker 890 Report post Posted April 17, 2018 When was the last time someone still in high school places top5 in senior freestyle, Steiber? Might have been Pico. Not clear on when he graduated HS, but he was in the Olympic trials final at 19 Cejudo won the US open at 18. I think he was still a senior with a couple month so spare. He was 3rd as a jr and 5th as a senior I believe? Gwiz won't be at the US Open; as a world medalist, he advances straight to the Final X. I would expect everyone else (Bradley, Rey, Nelson, Telford, etc.) will be there as the US Open winner gets a bye to the WTT finals, and the winner there will take on Gwiz. sgallan 592 Report post Posted April 18, 2018 Gable will have to show he can get out of the ties , endure the heavy hips, and go from there. A lot of physicality is in this division. Does he have a scoring shot? Any turn? Or the ability to force a push out? Kid is off scale on talent. I am hedging my bets, this cycle, on physicality. The top can go freestyle scoring rules and block his scoring attempts.
nyum 235 Report post Posted April 18, 2018 Anthony Valencia is the last high schooler to place at the US open, to my knowledge.
RetiredPoster 87 Report post Posted April 18, 2018 Gable is the best athlete at heavy right now... him winning the open would not surprise me even a little... Here we go again...He is not the best athlete at HWT. Gwiz and Rey are man mountains and very athletic. Dom Bradley is a big time thrower and an athlete. Telford, I am not very familiar with, but a 17 yr old HWT, will have his hands very, very full. 1 silver-medal reacted to this

RetiredPoster 87 Report post Posted April 19, 2018 clearly you have not watched him wrestle much... He's been wrestling BOYS. We've been down this road before with teen phenoms. Cletus_Tucker 890 Report post Posted April 19, 2018 He's been wrestling BOYS. We've been down this road before with teen phenoms. Let's see what he does, then we talk. We went down this road and you learned the phenom who was wrestling boys made the Olympic trials final by age 19 and on his first effort and ahead of all the veterans, NCAA champs (including a 4 timer), Hodge winners, world teamers, etc, with the lone exception of Molinaro.
