Final X format — current critique

Recommended Posts

Now that we are at the doorstep of the first final X bouts it seems that there is a general vibe going that splitting into 3 different dates / events isn’t preferred.

I’m frankly suffering from some fatigue given all the events. I get a family pass at times but given the Open, the challenge tourney, junior WTT, U23 / cadets ... the calendar has been full. Now three more weekends with events. Having so many seems to diminish the awesomeness.

Why not have all of final X on one weekend? One location.

I am liking the event happening separate from WTT challenge tourney. Decent build up and anticipation. Feeling it is more fair for all.

Feedback welcome. Other critiques?

I agree with Jason Bryant's approach - let's wait and see how it goes.

But so far, I think this new system pretty much ensures the best wrestler more so than the old system. Also remember how many people were complaining that all challengers had to win the WTT bracket that day only to face a fresh and rested returning medalist for best of 3 that very same night. Well, that's gone now. Plus like CP said on Flo radio, it's more of a freestyle "season" now.

As far as the 3 different dates at 3 different locations, I am really looking forward to these 3 consecutive Saturday nights on Flo at home. Heck, for the first one in Nebraska I think I'll go with Jordan Burroughs' favorite food - fresh hot NY pizza and hot Buffalo wings. Gonna go with ice cold Heinekens too. :D

Anyway, I guess some of the big questions will be the attendance at each and how the athletes and coaches like 3 different dates and locations. Also the wrestling media has to travel 3 weeks in a row so it'll be interesting to hear Jason's take on it as well as the Flo guys on their road trip in the van.

Again, we'll see how it goes and pretty sure there will be enough feedback after the events to see what needs to be tweaked or changed.

Dont forget the pepperoni. Burroughs loves pepperoni! Milkshakes too! He loves milkshakes!

Best reason to go to Final X is so you don't have to listen to the Flo announcing team.

Well I'm looking forward to the Flo announcing team and the whole Flo production of Final X. Maybe they're not perfect but I totally appreciate what they do and I think they are knowledgeable and passionate for our sport.

I can live stream my commentary from my couch if you'd like.  Commentary will mostly consist of me complaining about officials and telling wrestlers what they should be doing, as if I know better than both them and their coaches.  There will also be a lot of WHAT IS HE DOING?!?'s.

If that was offered as an alternate audio stream, I'd tune in for at least a little while.

To be clear, I love Flo and am happy to send them money every month. Their stream quality is great these days, and the ability to view more events than previously possible is outstanding. They are passionate, hardworking people, and I would never argue otherwise. My only complaint is that their commentary for big events is not very good.

I think we should all record ourselves watching matches, so we can rewatch them and critique our comments and behavior. The behavior changes would probably help retain new wrestling fans in the future.

How dare you defect from people’s entitlement to see the worst in everything and gripe and compain about whatever they can scratch up. Don’t you realize we’re in the 2010’s here in America!!??

When you pay for a streaming service, I don't think it's ridiculous to request that the announcers of those events actually call the matches instead of screaming the entire time/saying ridiculous things.  I also don't think it's a problem to complain when the stream stops working.

The mute button can fix that - although personally, I like most of the Flo announcers - I use the mute a lot when multiple mats are going and I don't want to hear spoilers on matches I haven't seen yet.

Yeah they don't do that...  People keep clinging onto the "obnoxious screaming Flo announcers" thing but that was ages ago.  Back in the day they were over the top but now Bader, Nomad, Pyles, etc do a good job calling the matches.  Are they 100% polished Bob Costas guys?  No, they may get a little pumped some times but certainly less than a Kevin Harlan or Gus Johnson.

They are knowledgeable and by and large do fine.  Can we stop with this screaming announcers false narrative?

I agree. And yes, Bader was very loud in the beginning and I think many remember that. But IMO he is much more polished now. Pretty sure Bader was with Flo from the beginning.

Totally enjoy Bader, CP, Nomad, Willie, Kyle, Ryan, Mike and all the guys, even Jaroslav. :D

They are pioneers in our sport.

I stand by my general statement.

+1.  Complain all you want about the $100 or whatever you spend annually on Flo broadcasts.  Where would we be without them?  I spend more in a day going to another sporting event than I do annually for the content Flo provides.

The screaming thing is not as bad as it was before, but it's still there and I cringe when I see the highlight videos they make with their "announcing" dubbed in over ESPN video.  I also think there is a clear difference in quality between the announcing on the ESPN/Big Ten Network/NBCSN streams than the flo stream.  Maybe the point is to expect less from flowrestling because they are the smaller outlet, but like I said, there's nothing wrong with providing constructive criticism that announcing is still an area for improvement.  They should watch how the pros do it and try to work their way up to that level.  There are some very good wrestling announcers..they just don't work for Flo.  Beyond the people who do the ESPN/BTN broadcasts, I think JB is one of the best as well.

I'm happy with what I get for what I pay with flo, but stop acting like it is some huge bargain.  It is competitively priced with other streaming services.

Agreed, and I don't think anyone disagrees with that.   But you didn't initially say "announcing is still an area for improvement" - you said  "actually call the matches instead of screaming the entire time"  - to me that isn't constructive nor is it true.

If your original post regarding the announcing was worded more like the one you just made it wouldn't have gotten the blowback it did...
