Best of 2000’s teams

Recommended Posts

OkState would be VERY tough to beat!

Surprisingly 125 is the only weight where they didn't have a NCAA Champ

125: Coleman Scott-He did his real damage at 133, but was a 2X AA at 125 with 8th and 5th place finishes.  Went 120-24 finishing 8th,5th,2nd(133),1st(133).

Hard to pick after that, but Piccininni has the highest finish during that span at 4th.

133: Oliver-Finished 4,1,2,1(149) going 126-6.  Johny Thompson was a 2X Champ as well, so the team may be strong with him here and Oliver at 149.

        Scott-Finished 2,1 at 133 his last 2 years.

141: Heil-Finished 4,1,1,R12 finishing 116-17.

        Nathan Morgan?

149: Esposito-Finished 120-12 with 95-7 and finishes of 2,1,3 coming at 149.

Oliver went undefeated his senior season winning a title.

157: Dieringer- Finished 3,1,1,1 for his career with the first 2 years being at 157.  This way both he and Hendricks make the 1st team.  Career record of 133-4.

        Joe Smith?

165: Hendricks- Finished 5,1,1,2 for his career with the first year at 157.  Went 96-6 at 165.

        Dieringer-See above.

174: Pendleton-Finished DNP,3,1,1 for his career with 1st year at 165.  Went 100-4 with his last 3 years at 174.

Perry-Finished R12,3,1,1 for his career with his 1st year at 184.  Went 98-4 his last 3 years at 174.

184: Cormier-Finished 2nd his senior year to Sanderson losing 8-4.  Rosholt was a champ here also, but probably helps team more to be at 197.

        Rosholt-Went 3rd,1st his first 2 years at 184.

197: Rosholt- Finished 1st and 1st his last 2 seasons at 197.

Munoz- Finished 3rd and 1st his last 2 seasons at 197.

285: Mocco- Finished 2,1,1,2 with his last 2 seasons at OkState after transferring from Iowa.  Only lost to Konrad his last 2 seasons.

Another sad, "lets remember the good old days" thread from the burrowing rodents.

We can discuss Ryan Thomas if u prefer?

It’s the off season just generating some convo. I will include the other teams here as well once I see em

I don't think anyone will have a more balanced squad.  Thinking PSU maybe wins a dual against that team, but they don't have the same depth.

125) Nico Megaludis (2,2,3,1)

133) Josh Moore (3,2)

141) Zain Retherford (5,1,1,1)

149) Frank Molinaro (8,5,2,1)

157) Jason Nolf (2,1,1)

165) David Taylor (2,1,1,2)

174) Ed Ruth (3,1,1,1)

184) Bo Nickal (2,1,1)

197) Quentin Wright (6,1,2,1)

285) Pat Cummins? (4,2)

I don't think numerous entries listed above wrestled in the 2000's.  Might make a difference.

OSU's lineup is a little artificial with Dieringer/Hendricks/Pendleton/Perry all slid into the lineup based on freshmen weights.

125 Megaludis is more credentialed at 125.  Scott was a better wrestler for sure, but he didn't reach his ceiling until he was at 133.  I will say I wouldn't be shocked to see Scott deck Nico if he went to the splits defense.  Scott had a great bottom leg cradle finish to his single.  3-0 PSU

133 OSU no matter how they decide the lineup.  Should be Scott honestly.  Or Johnny Thompson.  3-3

141 Calling Retherford a 141 is like calling Hendricks a 157 (what the article does).  Heil beats Freshman Retherford who was the only 141 Retherford.  Well unless it's Senior Heil I guess...6-3 OSU

149 I think it ought to be Retherford here.  Either way it's the match of the dual.  I think Oliver matches up with Retherford better because he beats him on his feet.  Molinaro was almost as nasty on top but had quicker feet in neutral.  9-3 OSU.

157 Nolf over freshman Hendricks or Sophomore National champ Dieringer. 9-6 OSU.

165 Dieringer over Taylor? Taylor over Dieringer?  Hendricks on bottom laying their gassed like he did against Perry?  I'll slide the tossup PSU's way this time.  9-9.

174 Pendleton vs Ruth would be awesome.  Or Senior Perry who hammered Howe in the finals.  12-9 PSU.

184 Nickal is just so dangerous.  Over any of the worthy but lesser OSU challengers.  15-9 PSU.

197 Rosholt over Wright.  I don't think Wright is better than Phil Davis who Rosholt hammered.  Rosholt was just that good in March.  15-12. PSU

285 Mocco over all of PSU's heavies at once.  15-15.

Heck of a dual and some great ones at 149, 165,174.

I'll take a stab at Ohio State

125 Nate Thomasello - Nico Triggas

133 Reece Humphrey - Robert Sessley - Nate Thomasello

141 Logan Stieber - J Jaggers - Robert Sessley - Hunter Stieber

149 J Jaggers - Lance Palmer - Micah Jordan - Jeff Ratliff - Cam Tesari

157 Keaton Anderson - Micah Jordan - Colt Sponseller

165 Bo Jordan - John Clark - Colt Sponseller

174 Myles Martin - Bo Jordan - Nick Heflin

184 Mike Pucillo - Myles Martin - Blake Kaplan - Kenny Courts

197 Kyle Snyder - Nick Preston - JD Bergman - Nick Heflin - Kollin Moore

285 Tommy Rowlands - Kyle Snyder - JD Bergman - Kirk Nail

don't think I missed any All Americans, everyone qualified for NCAA at the weights I had them. While they might not win every dual, I think an Ohio State alum team would match up with any other.

Jaggers would be 141 behind Logan, has to be Palmer at 149.

vs. PSU...

125 - Tomasello dec. Megaludis -- IMO it's a tossup but I'll go for NaTo to maybe make this closer, 3-0 OSU

133 - Humphrey dec. Moore -- 6-0 OSU

141 - Logan dec. FR Retherford -- 9-0 OSU

149 - Molinaro or any other year of Retherford dec. Palmer -- Palmer has a shot at Molinaro but not a 149 Retherford, 9-3 OSU

157 - Nolf TF Jordan -- We've seen this one a few times before, 9-8 OSU

165 - Taylor dec. Jordan --  I think the best version of Bo keeps this to a regular decision... but Taylor could easily big brother him given their history, 11-9 PSU

174 - Ruth dec. Martin -- Again, chance of bonus here. 14 - 9 PSU

184 - Nickal dec. Pucillo -- 17 - 9 PSU

197 - Snyder dec. Wright -- 17 - 12 PSU

285 - Rowlands dec. Cummins -- this match already took place. 17-15 PSU

Keaton Anderson was really good his Senior season in a VERY deep weight that had Bertin, Tirapelle, Becker, Roller, Owen, Maynard, Zinck and eventual Finalists that didn't AA that year in Joe Johnston and Matt Gentry.  If I remember correctly, an injury caught up with him and he did well to still take 6th.

I really struggled with what to do with Ohio State 133-157.

Sitting Palmer, a 4x aa, was tough but I went with a 2x NC in jaggers. Want to say Jaggers lost 1-0 to Schlatter at the Scuffle at 149. J didn't wrestle at NCAA because he blew his elbow up at Big Tens. At 133 I wanted Humphrey because of his big move potential and that pushed Logan up to 141. Jaggers was clutch once he acclimated to 141 so i am taking the extra 8 and putting him at 149 and expect him to be ready in January. If the dual was in November or December, Palmer is in. Couldn't bump Lance up to 157 as he never wrestled there and Anderson was tough as nails his senior year as MSU stated. (believe he tore his knee up at NCAA)

As madcat said, Palmer beat Molinaro at least twice head to head and Jaggers decked Molinaro in the OSU-PSU dual. As long as Keaton was healthy there is no way I put Jordan above Anderson at 157 and I dont think Nolf is teching Anderson. If you think Nolf and Ruth score bonus, I'd counter with Hump and snyder as bonus potential as well and remember Jaggers pinning Molinaro.

My two cents, with a few modifications:

125:  NaTo dec. Mega:  3-0 tOSU

133:  Humphrey dec. Moore - 6-0 tOSU

141:  Logie dec. FR Retherford - 9-0 tOSU

149:  Palmer dec. Molinaro - 12-0 tOSU

157:  Nolf TF MiJo - 12-5 tOSU

165:  Taylor Mdec. BoJo - 12-9 tOSU

174:  Ruth dec. Martin - 12-12 TIE

184:  Nickal dec. Pucillo - 15-12 PSU

197:  Wright dec. Preston - 18-12 PSU

HWT:  Snyder Mdec. Cummins - 18-16 PSU

All in all, it's those bonus points from Nolf and Taylor that makes the difference.  What a heck of a dual.

I just don't see Bo getting majored.  The ONLY time he ever gave up bonus in his entire career, even including his redshirt year, was a loss by FALL to Amine.  Taylor would be more likely to pin him than major him.  I see BoJo matching up with Taylor similar to Caldwell.  Taylor would win comfortably by around 4-6 points.
