when D2 and D3 guys could wrestle at D1 tournament

Recommended Posts

A fair amount of guys from the smaller schools won D1 titles on top of their honors at D2 or D3 levels. I know their teams' scores were not counted in team title race, but I'm curious if anyone knows or could figure out how high some of those teams might have finished in D1 team standings if their scores counted.

Off top of my head thinking the Schalles/Rohn era Clarion teams and the late 70s/early 80s Cal St Bakersfield teams might have done pretty well, maybe even top 5.

JT#1, great blog and I see some years with team placement info but not for all. that was my question, when they weren't officially able to compete team wise for the title, how high would some of those tough teams have placed if their points did count?

for example, 1973 Clarion had 3 champs. what would their team placement have been?

btw, you left out one of their champs that year.

I believe 1973 Clarion would have ended up with 55 points, good for 4th as a team. They had 4 participants, but only their 3 champs scored. 1st place was worth 12 points, advancement one, falls one bonus point, and a superior decision (then a 10+ point win) was worth a half. Based on that I've got Rohn with 17, Schalles with 20, and Simpson with 18.
