(ET)BUDAPEST, Hungary – Four U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers received their draws for the World Wrestling Championships. Competition in their weight classes begin on Sunday at the Papp Laszlo Arena. At 92 kg/202.5 lbs., 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2017 World bronze medalist J’den Cox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) will open against the No. 2 seed Dato Marsagishvili of Georgia, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist. Marsaghishvili scored a win over Cox at the 2018 World Cup in Iowa City. Also in Cox’ half-bracket are No. 3 seed 2012 Olympic champion and 2011 World champion Sharif Sharifov of Azerbaijan, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Gabor Hatos of Hungary and 2018 Russian National champion Batyrbek Tsakulov. In the opposite half-bracket away from Cox is No. 1 seed and 2012 University World silver medal Serdar Boke of Turkey. Cox is competing on his third straight U.S. World or Olympic team, and in his second Senior World Championships. He is wrestling in the new 92 kg weight class, after competing at 86 kg for the previous two seasons. A three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American for Missouri, he hails from Columbia, Mo. 2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) will open against 2016 World bronze medalist Akhmed Chakaev of Russia. Neither were seeded and randomly drew this pairing. Also in Stieber’s half-bracket are 2016 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion Vladimer Khinchegashvili of Georgia and the 2015 World bronze medalist Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine. On the opposite half-bracket are three-time World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Haji Aliev of Azerbaijan, 2017 World silver medalist Magomedmurad Gadzhiev of Poland, 2017 World bronze medalist Alejandro Valdes Tobier of Cuba, and 2014 World bronze medalist Bajrang of India Stieber is competing in his third Senior World Championships, after making the 2016 and 2017 U.S. Senior World Teams. He was a 2011 Junior World silver medalist. A four-time NCAA champion for Ohio State, he hails from Monroeville, Ohio. At 57 kg/125.5 lbs., 2017 World silver medalist Thomas Gilman (Iowa City, Iowa (Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) received the No. 2 seed and got a first-round bye. He will face the winner of the match between Givi Davidovi of Italy and Darthe Cappellan of Canada. Davidovi was 10th in the 2017 World Championships. Cappellan was a 2016 Canada Cup champion. Also in Gilman’s half-bracket are 2017 and 2018 European champion Giorgi Edisharashvili of Azerbaijan, , Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan (5th in Worlds twice). In the opposite half-bracket are 2017 World champion Yuki Takahashi of Japan, 2017 World bronze medalist Bekhbayar Erdenebat of Mongolia 2015 World bronze medalist Vladislav Andreev of Belarus and 2018 European silver medalist Zaur Uguev of Russia. Gilman is competing on his second straight Senior World Team. He was a 2014 Junior World bronze medalist, and competed on two Junior World Teams (2013-14) and a Cadet World Team (2011). A three-time All-American for Iowa, he attended high school in Omaha, Neb. At 79 kg/174 lbs., Kyle Dake, Ithaca, N.Y. (Titan Mercury WC/New York RTC) received the No. 4 seed, will open with a bye, then face the winner of the bout between Martin Obst of Germany and Jasmit Phulka of Canada. Obst was a 2018 European silver medalist, while Phulka was third in the 2013 and 2017 Commonwealth Championships. Dake also has No. 1 seed and 2018 European champion Akhmed Gadzhimagomedov of Russia in his half-bracket. He also has 2015 World silver medalist Urunbat Purevjav of Mongolia in his half-bracket. The other half-bracket away from Dake is loaded, with 2014 World silver medalist Sohsuke Takatani of Japan, 2013 World silver medalist Ezzatollah Akbari of Iran, three-time World bronze medalist Ali Shabanau of Belarus, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and two-time World bronze medalist Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan and 2013 World bronze medalist Rashid Kurbanov of Uzbekistan all competing in the other side of the draw. Dake is competing on his first U.S. Senior World Team. He was a member of the 2008 U.S. Junior World Team in Greco-Roman. Dake was a four-time NCAA champion for Cornell, becoming the first to win four NCAA titles in four different weight classes. He competed in high school in Lansing, N,Y. Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. Budapest time on Sunday morning, which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. He needs to win his next match and then we will have all 4 guys from yesterday wrestling for a medal. That's a lot of points. Not Russia or Georgia level for the first 4 weights, but still a solid performance. Colon has that Iranian. Colon I'd say is an underdog, but a live one. We have a chance to win 4 medals today.
