Just personal experience, but a lot of arrogance there.  "You need the Midlands, the Midlands doesn't need you" attitude, and year by year the quality of the field shrank.  Lots of personal favors for certain people, the rest of you blank off.  The hubris has come back to haunt them.

Yeah, pretty sad state of affairs. Could see it getting reduced, year after year, until now it's just a couple Big 10 teams and a whole passel of mediocrity. Iowa wins nearly every year with minimal competition.

The Scuffle passed 'em by, but the Scuffle has been on the downward slide for a couple years now, too. I think it's because teams are avoiding the competition for seed protection :( Hopefully we'll see another monster Scuffle like in the Dake/Taylor years :D

with other tournaments coming to pass it was inevitable that Midlands wouldn't be able to maintain the strength it once had. At one point it certainly was THE tournament. And NONE of the, in season, tournaments of today even remotely compare to the old Midlands. And NEVER will.

That said I will attend Reno and Cliff Keen Las Vegas........ because they are closer........ tho still quite a trip.

If people don’t want Iowa to win maybe the competition should step their game up.

edit: mistaken identity

Weren’t you crying about socialism on another thread?? If you don’t want your team to suck so much then do something about it! That’s the American way, right?

1. I couldn't care less about Iowa winning Midlands. The Hawkeyes don't crave real competition like they used to, though.

2. Nope, wasn't me "crying about socialism in another thread". Perhaps you are thinking of one of the resident TrumpChumps?

3. Not gonna quit my job making $100k plus a year to make $20k as an Oklahoma assistant coach (if they'd be crazy enough to hire me). So I'm just gonna keep bitching until they don't suck anymore.

The only reason to follow it is the Iowa drama. IE: Lee last year or their weights where multiple guys are meeting

The Scuffle should be better this year.

I had petitioned for years to bring a team and was finally awarded two (yes, two) spots.  I had a placer and the other guy went 2-2 (one of his losses being to Fried).  Basically, my two guys won more matches than numerous programs allowed full rosters.  I asked based on our performance to allow us to bring more competitors but was denied while the crap teams were still allowed to bring full squads.  Made my future scheduling decision very easy.  No, programs didn't need the Midlands and they'd find far better treatment and competition elsewhere.

I’ve been announcing the event the last 6-7 years and have noticed since the shift in who is allowing teams in, a distinct change in that exclusionary type of entry system. The qualifier rules the way they are in D1 could be a limiting factor in non-D1 entries at times, but it’s not like it used to be.

Too little too late.  They already turned away a lot of smaller schools with great wrestlers who found better fits, particularly in terms of travel and budget.  In their heyday, there was little justification for letting in a D-I team that couldn't win a match with 15 people entered and a slew of post-grads versus a, non-D-I team that scored.  If it were only about D-I, then get rid of all non-D-I, all post-grads, and all horrible teams that couldn't win a bout.  Not the way they played it back in the day.  JMHO

The duals scheduled in South Florida and run by Nu-Way are fast gaining steam.  Koll and Smith were the first to sign on, and interest is growing rapidly.  From a coaching perspective, each wrestler is guaranteed 4 matches, the team gets a little mini vacay in the sun, and costs are no worse for lots of teams than attending the Scuffle or Midlands.  I predict the South Beach Duals will dwarf both the former premier tourneys in participation within a couple years.

Koll and Smith were the brainchild of the South Beach Duals. If it wasn't for the two of them discussing it, there would likely be no such event.

FYI, there's also a little mini round-robin for the guys that didn't wrestle any matches, or the coaches simply want to get more work in for, after the event.

As far as it dwarfing the other tournaments, I don't think that's the idea. You'd never see a national championship-esque dual meet taking place at the South Beach Duals, because that's not the sort of event it is. It's an event for the wrestlers to have, basically, a working vacation.
