All-Native State NCAA Team!

Recommended Posts

Like most years, we like to start a thread that discusses what state could put together the best current NCAA lineup of native wrestlers. Now of course, with all of the mobility we see in the prep scene, their might be grey areas. But to make it easier, if there is a debate on where that wrestler is from, we will go off of the college website's bio for that wrestler. You can also bump up 1 weight class if you have a hole. So here we go.

Ill start with Michigan. I live in Colorado but a "native" of Michigan :)

MICHIGAN

125: #11 Rayvon Foley (MSU)

Foley had Cruz on the ropes in the first round last year and and a tough out in the backside. He is good. Can't beat Spencer, but believe he can take out anyone else in the weight class.

133: #13 (125) Devin Shroder (Purdue)

I couldn't find anyone that was ranked and past that I was too lazy to search. So I bumped Shroder up who is a tough cookie at 125. He'll scrap for 7. Might get a bloody lip too.

141: #19 Kanen Storr (Michigan)

Kanen had Eierman dead to rights in that match. While biased, I think Kanen was the better wrestler. Storr has established himself as a contender.

149: #5 Justin Oliver (NC State)

He's good. He's scrappy. Nothing flashy. He will punch you in the face. Even though he wants to kill you on the mat, he would always stop and help the elderly lady across the street. He will hang with everyone in the weight class.

157 #3 Alec Panteleo (Michigan)

He took down Nolf. Twice. He might be the most athletic wrestler in America, college and beyond. I once saw him jump off a two story building, swing off a ladder, roll of a trash bin into a 360 double back flip. So when I mean athletic, think of a cheetah...mixed with a rhino.

165 #5 Logan Massa (Michigan)

Can he win it? Yes. What are his chances? Low. Now, if we get the Logan from two years ago, Id be more confident, but last year makes me be more conservative. Top 3.

174 #3 Myles Amine (Michigan)

If there is any wrestler that is able to beat both Mark Hall and Valencia in a single tournament, it is this guy. He had two 2 point matches with Valencia and two 1 point matches will Hall last year. This man can win it all!

184 #8 Max Dean (Cornell)

Remember when a young Gabe Dean took out a national champion in Ed Ruth....yea I know Max might not be at the same level as Gabe but I do know Myles Martin isn't Ed Ruth either. While a longshot, Max could scrap his way into the finals.

285 #14 Trent Hiliger (Wisconsin)

Thor is finally in the lineup for the Badgers. The Lake Fenton native is the missing child of Asgard and honestly already has a contract to replace Chris Hensworth. If he can save the universe from some bad dudes, why can't he beat Gable? (Ok, I might be reaching) But AA is not a long shot.

Foley, Storr, Oliver, Panteleo, Massa, Amine, and possibly Dean (maybe I'm too optimistic) are all individually capable of making the finals. While very unlikely that they all do it in the same year, still a slim chance. Michigan is well represented in the NCAA scene.

I guess I can do the obvious one, since I'm from PA.

Pennsylvania:

125   #1 - Spencer Lee - Iowa   'nuff said

133   #5 - Luke Pletcher - Ohio State

141 #16 - Max Murin - Iowa

149 #8 - Brock Zacherl - Clarion

157  #1 - Jason Nolf = Penn State

165 #1 - Vincenzo Joseph - Penn State

174  #6 - Mike Kemmerer - Iowa  *  He's injured so we'll throw in #11 - Mikey Labriola - Nebraska

184  #5 - Zack Zavasky - Virginia Tech

197 #17 - Jake Woodley - Oklahoma (several higher rated kids but Woodley has the most potential)

285 #8 - Jordan Wood - Lehigh

It's a competitive lineup.

141: #2 Joey McKenna

149: #2 Anthony Ashnault

157: #17 John Van Brill

165: #9 Mekhi Lewis

174: #6 Jordan Kutler

184: #1 Myles Martin

197: ?? Do also have Nick Gravina #15 at 184

NJ might have the greatest state team, of any state, ever.  I see 4 champs and 6 finalists.

125 - Rivera or Glory will be a finalist

133 - Suriano will be an undefeated champion in the hardest weight

141 - McKenna, undefeated champion

149 - Ashnault, undefeated champion

165 -  Mekhi Lewis, finalist this year, champion next year

174 - McFadden likely to get 3rd, so I'll keep him off the dream team

184 - Martin - undefeated champ

looking back at the brackets from that monster year for PA '88,  I noticed Haselrig beat Dave Orndorff (Oregon St) in the finals....the father of the two tough brothers at the top of the  current Utah Valley lineup (Tanner & Tate)

Charlie and I have a lot of the same pics for Ohio but they almost have to be in a down year for the Buckeye state. Below is my stab at a two-deep All Ohio Team. I only bumped up for one weight with Jordan going back up to 157 and I added some depth from DII and DI reserves and redshirts.

125 Drew Mattin (uM)

  • Aaron Assad (uM) - Shakur Laney (OHIO)

133 Tariq Wilson (NCST)

  • Armando Torres (CSU) - Tim Rooney (KSU)

141 Dom Demas (OK)

  • Evan Cheek (CSU) - Jose Rodriguez (NDC)

149 Matthew Kolodwzik (Princeton)

  • Micah Jordan (tOSU)

157 Micah Jordan (tOSU)

  • Taleb Rahmani (Pitt)

165 Alex Marinelli (Iowa)

  • Kaleb Romero (tOSU)

174 Ethan Smith (tOSU)

  • Rocky Jordan (tOSU) - Joe Terry (Ohio)

184 Andrew McNally (KSU)

  • Hayden Bronne (TIFF)

197 Kollin Moore (tOSU)

  • Conel (KSU) is ranked higher and beat Moore head to head twice but I don't trust his injuries
  • A healthy Ben Darmstandt from Cornell would make this Ohio's deepest AA weight

285 Billy Miller (Edinboro)

  • Cameron Teacher (NDC)

Unless I am overlooking someone, going to be a tough time in Pittsburgh for St Eds

Hey KSchlosser, Billy Miller is at Va Tech now.

And how many years in a row is it now that St Ed’s has had a D1AA?

Not sure how I missed Miller transferring to VT. Was he a graduate transfer?

I think it is an All-American every year since 1982 and a DI All-American since 1991 for St Edward.

Not sure how I replied twice so as to not waste a post and since we were talking VT,  I will add that Jared Haught's brother had the best beard in Cleveland in 2018.

All Native State team?

Will have to do some looking, but North Dakota has a number of Reservations and a good population of Native Americans. Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation High School has a good team with one of the best coaches in the State. Maybe I'll start looking there first and then check Spirit Lake, Rocky Boy and the rest?
