The match that made them a 3x Champ

Recommended Posts

J’Den Cox- Lost to Kyle Synder in semis his sophmore year

Zain- Lost to Stieber in the semis his freshman year

Ed Ruth- Lost to Amuchastagi his freshman year in the quarters

Jake Rosholt- Lost to Ben Haizer in the semis his sophomore year

Ringer- Lost to St  John in the semis his freshman year

Greg Jones- Lost to Ralph Everett in the first round his sophomore year

What about the rest of the 3x Champs? What match made them a 3x Champ instead of being a 4x?

If not for Chris Pendelton Ben Askren would be a 4xer

3x NCAA Champ, 1x PIAA Champ his Sr. Year at Greensburgh Salem. I remember going to that year's PIAA's not at all focusing on him. Then he beats a pair of undefeated wrestlers in the semis and finals to win his one and only PIAA title.

Ed Banach to Mark Schultz finals as a junior

Lou Banach to Steve Dr Death Williams semis as a junior

Lincoln Mac to Steve Marinetti finals as a junior

Terry Brands  to Jason Keller finals as a junior

Brent Metcslf to Caldwell finals as a junior

Jeff McGinness to Ford from ASU, and Guerrero to not place as a junior

some notable 3 timers in the 80s that DNP the 'other year'. I used to have a hard time understanding that, how are you good enough to win it 3x but then can't even place the other year? Some may have been the rules then, wrestleback opportunities were not the same (ie one loss could be all it took to eliminate). Not sure if that applied for any/all of these guys or if there were other circumstances, but a few from the 3x champ/'only' 3xAA club:

Mark Schultz

Nate Carr

Ricky Bonomo

Carlton Haselrig

Hutton 1-1 RD to Gagne finals his Jr year

Of course then there's a bunch of 3x undefeated national champs who weren't allowed to wrestle Fr year, which match made them 3xers?

in his freshman year (1980), after winning the big 8, Nate Carr entered NCAAs seeded 4th.  He lost to Roger Frizzell (OK) in the quarters and Tony Surage (Rutgers) in the blood round.

Rick Bonomo was the 10th seed at NCAAs his freshman year (1984).  He lost to Mark Perry (OKst) in the quarters and Tim Riley (Iowa) in the blood round.

Why did Jones not excel at FS? I recall he had a nasty blast double, but that was about 15 years ago and my brain gets fuzzy thinking back that long ago
