Biggest Fix Needed to USAW

Recommended Posts

There should be two (2) domestic events per year where all of our best guys have a significant vested interest in competing.  Those events should be the US Open and WTT.

The solution is rather simple.  All the guys who currently earn a bye to WTT finals, instead, receive a bye to the US Open finals.  If the wrestler who received that bye wins at the Open, they also get a bye to WTT finals.  If they lose, no-one gets a bye to the WTT finals.

This would increase the importance of the US Open and allow fans a chance to get see all the top guys at two (2) domestic events per year.  This would be addition to seeing them at Worlds/Olympics as well.

Better yet, one event. Hold it in Vegas it would draw so much more interest if Vegas actually determined the team and nobody wants to travel to Omaha or wherever they’re holding it.  Currently “nationals” is a pointless endeavor. The fact that it’s a three-part qualification process is utterly insane.   Almost half of the field dropped out of the process from 2017 and I believe that this has to be the reason.

I was just thinking about something USAW could do that would help the sport the other day.

One of the reasons wrestling doesn't take hold in places is because of a lack of coaching.  If USAW started granting scholarships, maybe to guys who wrestled in high school but didn't in college for whatever reason, they would help them by bringing them to the OTC a few times a year and teaching them how to coach and build wrestling up, so that way when they finished college they would be able to jump right into coaching at the youth or high school level and help grow it.  Kind of similar to the Teach for America program.  In exchange for help from USAW they agree to spend X number of years teaching and coaching somewhere.  I don't know if there is a similar program now, but just a thought.

Put two guys in charge with full power to run things.

Dan Gable and J Robinson. Both major players who know how to promote the sport and command respect. Give them full control and you will see results quickly.

See results? We are literally the best we have ever been and there are more fans now than ever.

The modern USA wrestling leadership is the most successful in history based on the data.
