Dresser at ISU

Recommended Posts

Kevin Dresser has brought a ton of excitement to Iowa State’s program. He has done things that that his recent predecessors were unable to do. In 2 short years ISU is relevant again. Is Dressor the best coach for the Cyclones since Harold Nichols?

We are happy to have Dresser.  This team is super aggressive & well conditioned.

We are young.  Only Miklus gone next year & Carr, Shapiro, & Duggan ready to compete for 157, 184/197, & 285

ISU is definitely a team on the make. They'll be a top 5 team in a couple years.

Didn't Gibbons beat a Gable-coached Iowa team to win an NCAA Championship...? That was post-Nicholls, right?

That is correct. Gibbons was the Head Coach in 1987 (ISU’s last national title) when they snapped Iowa’s streak of 9 straight national titles.

Dresser has certainly done a solid job getting things going at ISU. With brands painting iowa orange it may just be a matter of time before ISU is the premier destination for wrestlers looking to train in the great state of iowa.

Premier destination?  Nope.

Very quick turnaround. They even lost Storr, who at the time was the highest recruit in the team. They “replaced” him with a guy ranked around #10. Not bad.

If I remember correctly Jackson had brought in a couple of highly ranked recruiting classes but just totally lost control of the team. So the talent was there if somebody who could manage it came in. I think most of the weights are still Jackson recruits. Just 125, 149, and 197 are from Dresser. Maybe you count 133 since Gomez had committed but wasn't on campus yet.

Correct

125 - Mackall (RSo), Dresser from Rutgers

133 - Gomez (RFr), KJ

141 - Parker (RSo), KJ

149 - Degen (RSo), Dresser from VT

157 - Straw (RJr), KJ

165 - Jennings (RJr), KJ; St John (RSr), Dresser from Iowa, Schumacher (Fr), Dresser

174 - Coleman (RFr), KJ

184 - Colbray (RSo), KJ

197 - Miklus (RSr), Dresser from Missouri

285 - Gremmel (RSo), KJ

Then lost Allar to Minnesota, Smith to Ohio State, Verkleeren to PSU. Might have been another 1 or 2

We see the same thing as Wisconsin. Recruits are needed, but so is the right coaching, and that includes attitude. KJ obviously has the technical knowledge needed, but the team simply didn't rally around him. He doesn't have the CEO type skills needed to run a high level D1 team.

Bono walked in to Wisconsin and with mostly the same guys, has a seriously good dual team and maybe even a top 10-15 NCAA tournament team. Pretty impressive.

They don't need Verkleeren, but Allar and Smith would've been nice additions. Coleman isn't quite there yet and they have a big hole at 165

Verkleeren was KJ's 149 pounder and Colbray would have stayed at 197 and Smith at 184.

Allar was pegged as our future 165 pounder.

Straw & Jennings is the only Junior starting also & Carr will replace one of them

Colbrey is way better at 184 and Smith is clearly better at 174.
