Old Corps 163 Report post Posted February 1, 2019 Growing up in Jersey in the 60s/70s, it was “states” As in “he won states last year.”
HurricaneWrestling2 579 Report post Posted February 1, 2019 Pinfall was still in official use by the NCAA until the mid-1950s. We should keep it as part of our historical legacy IMO. Plus it sounds much more dramatic to hear an announcer shout "Winner by Pin-Fall!"
TobusRex 1,826 Report post Posted February 1, 2019 Never used it. Always call them either 1) pins, or 2) falls.
Old Corps 163 Report post Posted February 1, 2019 I remember reading the Easton, Pa newspaper in the early 70s and when it listed match box scores, the term “threw” was often used to indicate a pin. As in... ”Darwin Brodt threw Joe Schmuckatelli - 5:19” 1 Husker_Du reacted to this

kgschalhoub 49 Report post Posted February 2, 2019 How about we get rid of "tech fall" and call it a "superior decision." That fixes the problem. So we have major decision, superior decision, and fall. That's it.
HurricaneWrestling2 579 Report post Posted February 2, 2019 14 hours ago, TobusRex said: Guess they figured every throw ended in a fall :D In a way you're right. In colonial times a match ended when you threw your opponent to the ground. Pinning the shoulders didn't come along until later. So a throw was the early equivalent of today's fall. (Sportswriters carried over the earlier terminology by reporting that a wrestler was "thrown" when he was actually "pinned" - as pointed out by the astute Old Corps above.) As an aside, when NCAA wrestling began, there were only two ways to win - either by fall or riding time. (Instead of "riding time" it was called "time advantage." Early brackets would show either "WBF" or "TA" to show how the match was won. (The point system wasn't introduced until 1941.) 1 TobusRex reacted to this
