Unpopular opinion - we need more DeSantos out there

I like the antics - the taunting, the headmushes, the throat slashes, the talking during the match.  One problem with college wrestling is that it utterly lacks mainstream appeal.  One reason why MMA is so popular is all the "extracurricular".  Jawing and shoving during press conferences, showboating and taunting during the fight.  Fighting AFTER the fight.

I say the more, the better.  Who cares, take away team points...but let's not act like guys like DeSanto don't make wrestling more exciting to the casual fan.

Right... mainstream appeal.  These are the same jackholes that voted for what we got today, are outraged by guys taking their shirt off at concerts, and are triggered by the word snowflake.  The LAST thing I want is mainstream appeal, if "that" is how our mainstream thinks and acts.

If I’m wrestling DeSantos at the ncaa I purposely get under his skin. Instigate before the match. Get him all kinds of upset. Show him his girlfriends picture on my Instagram   I’m on to the next round, Iowa loses team points and all of the sudden this isn’t very funny...except to me...I’m laughing.

I remember a time when some people argued Iowa would give him the discipline he needs in his life. Looks like they are letting him do whatever he wants with no repercussions. Eventually he will be done wrestling and need a regular job-wonder how well that will work out for him.

Unless the job is assistant coach at Iowa.

I suspect he’ll try his hand at MMA.

At least Brands didn't kidnap him out of a rehab program ala Cael.

If "Iowa" means the Brands, they would be the last people I would expect to be handing out discipline, given their own poor behavior matside.

Thumbs up during a lift? A-hole move but not horrible; lost a team point, albeit because of the excessive celebration but the real reason was known by the refs most likely. Other post-match stuff? Who cares - walk your talk at the end of the season. But that leads into...

If you can't handle a loss and less than a year ago you tried to injure your opponents in horrific ways? That's why people don't like him. He wasn't wrestling, he wasn't even being cheap, he was trying to deck and wreck. That's the difference.

Exactly.  If all he did was showboat, I wouldn't have a problem with it.  The issue is that his poor behavior is dangerous to his opponents when he is losing.  Because of how reckless he has shown himself to be in the past, he should be kept under a microscope and held to a higher standard when competing.  If you let stuff like this/spitting on the mat slide when he is winning, he is going to go to the dangerous BS when he is losing.  The kid lacks a moral compass more than anyone I have ever seen compete, and it needs to  be put to a stop.  This is not a Ben Askren/Johny Hendricks situation.  They talked trash/showboated, but were under control in the process.

Did you see Donahoe compete?

I made the mistake of trying to see what he was up to a couple of months back. What a mess his google search is. A lesson to be learned there.
I tried to look it up, everything is from 2009 and earlier. I'm intrigued, though. Is it just more gay porn stuff?

Does anyone really think DeSanto is helping to grow the sport by acting like a douchebag?  This is anathema to long time fans, who are the ones who show up at events.

This also does nothing to bring in “non wrestling” fans, and probably helps to reinforce the notion that wrestling is filled with a bunch of uneducated neanderthals.

Show emotion.  Just don’t taunt your opponent, especially after humiliating him on the mat.

It’s funny how naive you and most others on this board are.

It’s like his life stopped in 2009 where I last remembered all that stuff. Imagine that literally follows you around the rest of your life.

Ahhh, yeah. He at least put out the facade he didn't care, but...that's an interesting legacy for such a successful athlete.

Let's demand coaches send out 10 guys who will "entertain" everyone with "a little emotion" and just forget that this is a game of skill, endurance, honor, respect, discipline, and mental toughness.  Each school will round up a group of DeSantos, Ashnaults, Bergers, etc., hire a coach who walks on the mat whenever he wants and challenges calls in the most theatrical way possible and--presto--the sport will generate tons of positive media attention and finally garner the respect it supposedly craves.  Win or lose, competitors will blow kisses, shoot guns, walk opponents over to their bench and give thumbs up before slamming them, flying kimuras will not only be legal but required, heck, set up some ropes and turnbuckles...oh wait, I guess we've already done that.

it is what happened...

Or maybe the seasoned veteran coach saw a situation was about to get out of hand and took action. He wasn’t grabbing Austin to hurt him or to vent. He grabbed him to defuse a situation that was about to explode.

manning acted like a jack ass the entire dual... several of his wrestlers acted like jack asses during the dual... manning put his hands on a member of the opposing team...

that is what happened...
