Top Wrestlers From Each Graduating Class

Recommended Posts

Who are the best (top 3) wrestlers in their respective graduating classes? Thought it might be fun to see who the best guys at each "age level" are. My thoughts:

Seniors:

1. Bo Nickal

2. Jason Nolf

3. Seth Gross (possibly will get another year)

Juniors:

1. Vincenzo Joseph

2. Mark Hall

3. Zahid Valencia

Sophomores:

1. Yianni D (no RS)

2. Alex Marinelli

3. Sebastian Rivera

Freshmen:

1. Gable Steveson (no RS)

2. Daton Fix

A redshirt I am forgetting about?

Obviously Spencer Lee could be included in the sophomore list but the 3 I picked look better to me so far this season. Which class looks to be the strongest? The Jr/Sr class has some hammers and definite all time top talent candidates.

Wick is more accomplished than Marinelli

I like Myles Martin being above Gross either way, I do think he belongs in that conversation. Marinelli hit a bit of a slump last post season but remains undefeated this year and has been pretty dominant. The current version of Marinelli is better than the current version of Lee, though that's just my opinion of course.

I'll do it by the year they graduated high school, as this may slightly narrow any age gaps due to red/gray shirts. IMO, it's also funner to rank wrestlers who were recruited within the same class. In addition, I'll also arbitrarily start at 2009 since that's around when I started following the sport.

2009

  1. Dake (1, 1, 1, 1)
  2. Ruth (3, 1, 1, 1)
  3. Taylor  (2, 1, 2, 1)

HM: Nelson (7, 1, 1, 2), Perry (DNP, 3, 1, 1), Ramos (DNP, 3, 2, 1)

2010

  1. Stieber (1, 1, 1, 1)
  2. McMullan (3, 2, 3, 3)
  3. Delgado (7, 1, 1, DNP)

HM: Houdashelt (DNP, 6, 5, 1), Ness (2, 4, 2, 6), Port (DNP, 2, 3, 2)

2011

  1. Dieringer (3, 1, 1, 1)
  2. Gwiazdowski (8, 1, 1, 2)
  3. Megaludis (2, 2, 3, 1)

HM: Garrett (3, 2, 5, 1), Brewer (7, 8, 1, 3), Green (7, 7, 3, 3)

2012

  1. Dean (3, 1, 1, 2)
  2. Clark (5, 2, 2, 1)
  3. Gilman (DNC, 4, 2, 3)

HM: Tsirtsis (1, 3, DNP, 7), Jordan (7, 7, 2, 4),  Dudley (DNP, 8, 2, 3)

2013

  1. Retherford (5, 1, 1, 1)
  2. Cox (1, 5, 1, 1)
  3. Martinez (1, 1, 2, 2)

HM: Heil (4, 1, 1, DNP), Tomasello (1, 3, 3, 3), Jordan (3, 3, 2, 5)

2014

  1. Snyder (2, 1, 1, 1)
  2. Nickal (2, 1, 1, TBD)
  3. Nolf (2, 1, 1, TBD)

HM: Gross (DNP, 2, 1, TBD), Micic, (4, 2, TBD, TBD), McKenna (3, DNP, 3, TBD)

2015

  1. Joseph (1, 1, TBD, TBD)
  2. Valencia (3, 1, TBD, TBD)
  3. Martin (1, 5, 2, TBD)

All in all, 2009 and 2013 are incredible when you look at the resumes of their HMs and consider I left off guys like St. John and Coon. The top 3 of those two years are also filled with some of the best we've ever seen in recent memory. 2014 is right there with those two years in terms of top-end talent as the trio of Snyder, Nickal, and Nolf will likely total 12 final appearances and 9 titles in just a few weeks. I believe you would be hard-pressed to find a trio as good as 2009, 2013, and 2014 in any given high school recruiting class. I think it may a bit too early to look at any class beyond 2015, but if I had to project/pick...

2016: Hall, Wick, Marinelli, Rivera, Hidlay, Suriano

2017: Yianni, S. Lee, Fix, N. Lee, O'Connor, Arujau

2018: Steveson, Carr, Beard, Sasso
