boconnell 1,417 Report post Posted March 9, 2019 (edited) Every report is that he made scratch weight. No way to know since all the reports come from inside the program, so take it for what it's worth. The OSU board is also saying John's dad (Joe's grandfather) died last night. No way to tell what affect this had, but it's safe to assume it had some. Hopefully he can bounce back in consis and qualify. Decision backfired? I am a little surprised by this. But Demetrius Romero is pretty tough, I remember watching him in high school and thinking he would be successful in college. He does have a win over Massa too, I’m hoping he strings a good NCAA tournament together. Go Idaho!
ThatLogSchuteWasCarrying 179 Report post Posted March 9, 2019 Romero is a ranked 10th.It isn't like he lost to a no name guy. I'd be extremely surprised if he failed to qualify and with no win percentage or RPI he'd have a ****ty seed regardless of where he places. Hell, that loss could even help his seeding because now he will have five matches this weekend and become eligible for the final rankings.

TobusRex 1,826 Report post Posted March 10, 2019 Alright, a serious question: why do people use the term "laid an egg" as an INSULT? If Joe Smith, or John Smith, actually LAID AN EGG it would be nothing less than miraculous. I wouldn't want to eat that egg, but that's beside the point. TobusRex 1,826 Report post Posted March 10, 2019 (edited) Oh, looks like Joe Smith qualified for NCAAs. He's in the Conso semifinals, so the worst he can finish is 6th. Big 12 has 6 qualifiers at 165 pounds. Shocking the Big 12 has only 1 157 pound slot allocated. Edited March 10, 2019 by TobusRex

"This expression is probably derived from the idea of an egg being round and therefore resembling a zero. A `duck' (duck's egg) is a score of zero in British sport, and the equivalent in American sport is a `goose egg'." 1 TobusRex reacted to this

nightcrawler 4 Report post Posted March 10, 2019 8 minutes ago, Plasmodium said: There are 5 qualifiers, so Smith needs to win one more. And, if Smith took 6th, he would still actually likely meet the criteria for Bronze Standard - placing one spot below AQ and beating someone who earned and kept an AQ spot (it didn't say "at that weight" and given some of his 174 wins, that's also a yes) - giving him the 2 criteria he needs to be eligible for an at-large bid. That said, the formulaic model they're using for at-large bids this year does not do him favors. Head to head wins account for 25% of the rationale, and he has zero of those because of the weight change. Dude just needs one win in the next two matches and he's fine. That's not how it is interpreted. Body of work at 165 is all that counts. That being said... if he wins the 5/6 bout and gets the AQ, how do you seed a 5th place Big 12 guy with a 4-2 record?
