Gasman1 43 Report post Posted March 12, 2019 signature win? a 1-0 vs Hermida Other than that, he got in on previous accomplishments. Consider this, the Purdue wrestler that beat Stoll in the wrestle-backs (and placed 8th) is sitting home for NCAAs

Mizzou had a guy get in over someone who beat him and placed ahead at conference tourney last year. This isn't unprecedented (though I didnt think Stoll would get in). wrestlefan57 8 Report post Posted March 12, 2019 Sam Stoll should have never been on the mat prior to Big Ten's. He clearly has issues with strength in the left knee - he would have been better served spending his hours rehabbing the knee and not on the mat. His body will not allow him to shoot and finish like he did three and four years ago. In the next two weeks he needs to develop some type of take down other than a single or double. He does not have the strength to get off the bottom from 90% of the heavyweights. If you win the toss take up and ride him because he lacks the leg strength to get up and out. Everything I have seen the young man wrestle he has displayed great sportsmanship - win or lose. He deserved more respect than was shown to him by a freshman at Big Ten's. While not an Iowa fan I am happy he was rewarded for his time in the sport and wish him the best after wrestling.

Losing to an 11-25 kid at the conference tournament should disqualify you from the at large bid. 2 Warren_Haynes and pipewrench reacted to this

It doesn’t though when you have more quality wins and your only other losses are against top 15 guys.

While not an Iowa fan I am happy he was rewarded for his time in the sport and wish him the best after wrestling. What Stoll were you watching? I can probably count with my fingers how many leg attacks he's taken in the last 3 or 4 years. Even when healthy, he almost never attacked legs. He's a great greco wrestler and was able to physically dominate opponents and march them to the edge. The new edge stall rules allowed him to convert that into points. His constant forward pressure then often lead his opponents to take bad shots to avoid stalling calls. Stoll, back then, had remarkably quick feet for a man of his size and had excellent go behinds. The biggest impact of his injuries was his inability to continue adding leg strength, which then lead to him no longer being able to march guys off the mat. Even last year he wasn't able to do this as well and certainly not this year. He basically has no way to score against top guys anymore because he can't march them off the mat, and he lacks the lateral quickness he used to have to run behind on his opponents shots. It's really a shame he had such bad injury struggles. As a freshman, he looked like a guy who could develop into a dominant force. He was on pace for a top 5 seed before the Gwiz match where he tore his ACL the first time his freshman year. Last year, he added a lot of really nice skills. His hand fighting is actually really fun to watch if you know what to look for and appreciate hand fighting as technique. He also really developed his top game too. If you can find it somewhere (it used to be on youtube), watch his R12 match against Nathan Butler last year. It is a masterful hand fighting performance. He snapped Nathan Butler all over the mat for 7 minutes for a 15-3 win. Butler was a really tough heavyweight too. That was Stoll at his absolute best and it's a shame that injuries prevented him from reaching that form consistently. I'm hoping he finds a way to the stand to finish his career.
