Housebuye 2,419 Report post Posted March 16, 2019 Iowa really got lucky with how the brackets fell out. Stoll has a relatively easy path to AA, considering his terrible (for him) season leading to his terrible seed. First, he has Jordan Wood. Stoll is an underdog here, but not a huge one. A win puts Stoll against Elam or Voss, both of whom he was ranked ahead of for most of the season. A win there likely matches him up with Conan Jennings becuase Jennings always beat Parris (#5 seed, what should be the toughwst match so far). Stoll is 2-0 vs Jennings, both last season, he pinned him at Big10s and beat him 8-2 earlier in the season. That would put Stoll in the semis. On the backside, he might have to beat Parris which would be tough, but there is a path to AA. Parris being the 5 seed really helped Stoll with the draw. Summary: Stoll only has to win 1 upset to make the semis lost likely. Jordan wood, round 1. Even a loss there gives him a path to AA.
BigTenFanboy 1,790 Report post Posted March 16, 2019 Beating a top seeded wrestler essentially makes you that seed. If Stoll beats Wood, for all intents and purposes he is essentially now the new 4 seed.
stp 564 Report post Posted March 16, 2019 (edited) Opinions please on Tariq Wilson vs. Nick Suriano. Of course.....Tariq had to get by Lizak first. Yikes! A tough draw for Tariq...imo. Edited March 16, 2019 by stp

In a full bracket the top seed always wrestles the lowest seed in the first round, the #2 wrestles the second lowest seed, etc. Edited March 16, 2019 by KCMO2

KCMO2 673 Report post Posted March 16, 2019 The way it used to be the top seed still had a first round match, but the pigtail was randomly drawn. But that was before they seeded 1-33. 1 pamela reacted to this

There have been numerous top-four seeds that have lost their opening bouts. Mack Lewnes went 0-2 as the #1 at 165 in 2009. Greg Jones lost his opener as the #1 at 174 in 2003, eventually losing in R3 of consolations. In English's situation, brackets were randomly drawn after the seeded wrestlers were bracketed. English was bracketed against the #12 in the opening round. Maple was a shell of his champion self as the #4 at 149 as a senior. And you answered incorrectly... Since English accomplished his feel-good story... In 2017, "Little Nicky" MFF as the #3 in the opening round at 125 In 2016, Ethan Ramos lost as the #4 in the opening round at 174 In 2015, John Eblen lost as the #4 seed in the opening round at 174 In 2015, Michael Moreno lost as the #2 seed in the opening round at 165 In 2015, Bobby Telford lost as the #3 seed in the opening round at 285 These are just opening round losses. There are numerous instances when top-four guys lose to the non-seeded wrestlers during the tourney - particularly in the consolations. In 2018, Kaid Brock lost as the #4 in the QF In 2018, Kollin Moore got pinned as the #1 in the QF In 2018, Kollin Moore got beat as the #1 in the 3/4 bout In 2017, Anthony Collica lost at the #2 in R2 of the consolations at 149 In 2017, John Epperly lost as the #4 in the R12 at 174 In 2015, Nahshon Garrett lost as the #2 in round 2 at 125 In 2015, Joey Dance lost as the #3 in the R12 at 125 In 2015, Johnni DiJulius lost as the #4 in cons R3 at 133 In 2015, Dylan Ness lost as the #3 in the cons SF at 149 And all this happened AFTER James English beat #4 Kendric Maple in the 2014 7/8 bout at 149.
