Penn State - How Do They Look Next Season?

Sorry, gonna need a doctor's note on that injury. Just because a wrestler doesn't look anything like their former self is not an excuse. Unless we have a doctor's note that's just the competition catching up.

I don't know anything about how medical redshirts are awarded, but I don't think Shakur's application for one would be based on this year.

I remember when PSU won their first set of titles I was left thinking..."But lets see what they do without Taylor and Ruth!"  Then along came Nolf and Nickal.  There is a chance next year's lineup is very beatable and there is a chance next year's lineup just explodes and wins by 30.  At this point I fully believe PSU has to be a permanent favorite until actual in season results show us otherwise.

You do realize the year after Taylor and Ruth Penn State did not win, and weren't even close....right?

Probably because he is 0-3 against Hunter Ladnier

That's a very compelling reason. I forgot about that. I'm going off my memory of Scuffle performances this year.

Yeah, his best win is Zac Carson who went BBQ

Edit: Ok maybe Chase Straw

125 Teske

133 RBY

141 Lee

149 Verk

157 Berge

165 Joseph

174 Hall

184 Rasheed if he's back

197 Conel/Beard wouldnt be shocked if Beard was better, but they may redshirt them anyway.

285 Cassar

The only way Manville sees the lineup is if Rasheed doesn't come back and they want to redshirt Brooks. He's not very good, so if he goes at 184, that's a big hole. He could maybe be serviceable at 174 if Hall takes an olympic shirt, but even then I don't see him scoring much. A lot of people remember him from his freshman and sophomore year in high school, but he's really stagnated since then, at least in folkstyle. His greco focus also hurts his development as his weakest point is his lack of offense. His best career win is Tanner Skidgel.

Also PSU fans should be hoping for Rasheed back. He is a legit title contender at this weight regardless of how this weekend went for him. 184 is wide open next year. Brooks is both small for 184 and a freestyle specialist. All of his big results are in freestyle and he didn't look great at Midlands at 174, being fortunate to beat Ben Harvey and getting shutout by Ryan Christenson.

This team should probably be favored to win again. Iowa has some horses back next year, but they haven't been able to put it together yet and a lot of the excitement is over the potential of some of their guys, not their actual results.

My apologies, my post wasn't clear. Rasheed did not even make R12. Regardless of injury, he is a 1x AA who placed 7th. He is an afterthought as it comes to team points. Again, EthenLofthouse has better credentials.

I thought Manville was undersized and bumping way up when he was subbed in this season. Slotting Mason into the lineup may also create some goodwill for his brother's recruitment down the road, assuming he didn't already verbal somewhere else already.

As someone else mentioned, lots of question marks right now. I'm not really sure who is coming in, but there team looks a little green/unproven below 165.

125   Teske
133   RBY
141   N.Lee
149   Verk
157   Berge/J.Lee?
165   Cenzo
174   Hall (ORS?)/Manville
184   Manville?
197   Shak?/Conel?
Hwt   Cassar?

Cornell's lineup seems to look better, and Iowa looks a lot better on paper right now. I think OSU and Michigan could be in the mix too.

Mizzou could be in the top group too.  They are sitting there currently with 2 or 3 true freshman.  Personally, I think they should redshirt all of them and Eireman take and Oly redshirt.  That would set them pretty good for a trophy the following year and they would be young also.  However, my opinion means little and Smith has more than proven he knows what he is doing.

He was and I don't hold those matches against him. He wasn't particularly good at either 165 or 174 this year either though which is what I'm going off of. It could be good for recruiting, but I doubt that gets him into the lineup. He's a tough kid, but he hasn't improved much in the last 4 years, probably in part because of his focus on greco.

You do realize I said next year's lineup could be very beatable right?  Do you seriously have a problem with me saying the team who has won 8 of 9 is the favorite until in-season results show otherwise?

This is the line up. Seth Neville who greyshirted this year will back up Cassar.

They also redshirted Mega and Retherford that year. Nolf was also redshirting that year so it's conceivable they could have won if they went for it.

Manville bumped up 2 weight classes and held his own against everyone but Martin.  He lost tight matches against Marsteller and Finesilver at the scuffle at 165 so he'd probably be a qualifier there.  His only loss to a non-qualifier all year was to Hidlay who is redshirting or would have been an AA.

Some of the most ignorant takes all in one thread. LOL. Pure entertainment

From the “Cornell looks better” to the biggest hater Wrestlingphish’s dopey comments.

Sometimes it’s better to be silent and thought a dummy then to open your mouths and remove all doubt

This is a wrestling forum. Do the people that watch actually know what the hell is going on?

Great contribution to the thread.

The general thought about PSU next year- it depends on shirts.   imo- Way way way way too early to guess psu's lineup.  Their cupboard is not bare.

I dunno, Cornell's lineup looks pretty good. Big gap in the middle, but PSU will also have a lot of untested talent. It would be a close dual because both teams are strong where the other has question marks.

125   Vito
133   Tucker
141   Yianni
149   ?
157   ?
165   ?
174   Ramirez/Foca?
184   Dean
197   Darmstadt
Hwt   Fernandes

Iowa is looking like a solid crew of returners though one of JRent, Murin, Lugo, and Brands will probably have to sit. Maybe everyone bumps up after next season once Lugo and Kimmer are gone. But in an Iowa-PSU dual, I'd put my money on Iowa (and I'm neither an Iowa or PSU fan).

125   Lee
133   DeSanto
141   JRent/Murin
149   Murin/Lugo
157   Brands
165   Marinelli
174   Kimmer
184   Assad
197   Warner
Hwt   Cass

And yah, it's super duper early still, but that's already been qualified.

What about Kaleb Young 5th at 157  in NCAA ?  I think he is a Sophomore.  Also Do they burn incoming Freshman Assad's shirt when they have Cash Wilke?  Also does Spencer Lee take an Olympic Redshirt?

Iowa will go all in the next 2 years, imo. This is their window of opportunity. They'll be even better in 2021 than they will be in 2020, but after that its back to the lower podium steps.

Yes, Seth beat Hemida and Pelusi and had a close one with Demetrius Thomas.  Though Hemida was likely out of shape.

The only thing stopping Cassar from coming back is MMA.  Rumors of a transition sooner rather than later, but earlier in the season he said he wanted to come back for one more year and then make a 2020 run (125Kg)

At the rate Cassar is putting on weight, he will look like Brock Lesnar if he comes back next year.  He might be that dominant too if he can put on another 30 pounds of muscle.
