Free US Open Pool

Recommended Posts

Rules:  You have $1500 to spend.  You pick a team of wrestlers competing at the US Open at the prices listed below.  Max 1 wrestler per weight class.  You can leave as many weights as you want empty (so at the extremes, your lineup could have as few as 3 wrestlers or as many as 10).

Points are awarded based on placement:

1st = 10 points,

2nd = 6 points

3rd = 4 points

4th = 1 point

Most total points wins.  I'll post results by the end of the weekend.  Might be a small prize for the winner... we'll see. :)

Good luck!

Due to confusion in the initial replies, I'm editing this post to add a clarification:  if you want a wrestler who isn't listed here, you have to name them.  "Anyone else" means "you can pick any other 1 wrestler at this weight", not "you get the entire rest of the field" :)

I'm guessing "anyone else" means "pick another single wrestler" and not "you get the field"

Oh snap. Good point. Very good point.

It seemed too easy to pick everyone else.

125kg - Youssif Hemida ($100)

$1500

Having to actually pick someone for that final spot totally screws my picks.  I honestly don't think anyone not listed as one of the favorites will win any of the weights.  So I went with homer picks or ones that make a little bit of sense.  You can obviously tell which ones are which.

My actual picks are Fix, Ramos, Zain, Nolf, IMAR, Ringer, Martin, Nickal, Gadson, Coon.

Correct.  Sorry, I should have made the clearer.  No field in this pool.... you have to name a wrestler.

If you think that, you do have the option pick no one at particular weight.  If you do this a few times, you can probably save enough money to buy another favorite.

Nah. That is the chump's way to go.

Folks should grow some and try to win by picking someone from every weight while making the 1.5k work.

Putting Nolf at $200 basically means every single person is going to pick him.

I won't comment on every single pricing decision I made (my day job is an actuary, so I do have experience in pricing) :)  But I will for this one because it is an interesting case.

I waivered between 200 and 300 for Nolf.  I went low because if he doesn't upset the 4 time champ at this weight, he will get at most 4 points.  And further, as an NCAA champ, he is already in WTT, so I think it is fairly likely he defaults out for 0 points if he loses to Green.

Well... that makes this much harder.  Will have to do some thinking and edit my initial post.

You should just post a new one and leave the old. You know if you win haters will hate and say you edited your post to win.

That being said, I imagine making that a stipulation (no post edits) would negate said wifflewaffles.

I thought there was a discussion very recently about wrestlers not being intelligent and successful :)   I work in BI doing some pseudo-actuarial work and am side by side with the short-tail Act/UW teams so I can appreciate your point of view. However, since I'm also active with the marketing team I'm going to do some very creative math when I make a few loss triangles and find a loophole in themat.com's rules and regulations manual to reserve some cap money in this pool (hoping to carry it over with interest into WTT pool)

There's a time stamp on the edit though, so it should be fine.  Either way, it's right here:
