What college produces the best freestylers?

Recommended Posts

It seems that Cornell the answer currently.  Yianni, Garrett, Dake are all top notch.

2nd place is probably Ohio State - Snyder, McKenna, Stieber (until recently).  3rd is probably a tie between Iowa, Nebraska, Mizzou and Ok State.  Gilman, Ramos, Eierman, Cox, Green, JB, Dierenger, etc.

The big question is why isn't PSU better....sure they have Taylor (pray he isn't severely hurt) but other than that no real freestyle studs.  Until recently Retherford seemed to be their best hope but Yianni is otherworldly.

Is it a colleges job to produce freestylers? Colleges wrestle folkstyle so success in that area should be all they are judged on. Its not a colleges job to get the 1% of their wrestlers ready for the world stage.

Not technically but it drastically helps with recruiting which, is a massive part of their job.

Snyder was Snyder before Ohio State.  tOSU just helped him evolve a bit, but he would have done what he did, regardless of school.

Ignoring entirely the Tervel  Dlagnev relationship, which is credited greatly by Kyle himself for his success.

The answer is probably a school that isn't being discussed.

If we put a system to judge this, we would probably use college wrestling performance as an indicator of basic wrestling abilities and then see how the freestyle results compare.

So what school seems to overachieve in freestyle compared to how they perform in folkstyle?

For Cornell you mention YianniD and Garrett who have achieved nothing on the world stage yet you don't mention Bo Nickal and Jason Nolf whom I'm predicting will earn medals at some point in the future

This is a pretty moot argument, though. Achieving success on the world stage isn't something to be attributed to any University. It is extremely difficult to even make a World/Olympic Team because you have multiple time NCAA Champions in your whole bracket.

Success on the world stage relies on an individual's work ethic and passion. No university can teach those things to any wrestler.

PSU world team & Olympic members Taylor, Zain, Ed Ruth, Frank Molinaro. So better than Iowa Jimmy. Also Varner has been at PSU and coached by Cael all his freestyle career.

So, Yianni and Nahshon have achieved nothing on the world stage, but Nickal and Nolf should be mentioned...because they too have achieved nothing on the world stage but they might in the future?  Yikes.

By the way, Yianni has two world gold medals on the world stage (albeit at Cadet), and Garrett has made the US world team.

Get back to us when Nolf and Nickal have even come that close to the "world stage."

No college produces freestyle wrestlers... they only hamper them

actually with all the RTC money coming in, i would think it considered a sham if they didn't produce freestylers...
