Will Vegas get to host the NCAA's now?

Recommended Posts

Vegas would be an awesome place for NCAA’s.

HOWEVER...I can tell there aren’t many sports bettors on this thread because I’m the first to mention there’s one MAJOR problem with having the NCAA wrestling tournament in Vegas: it’s in March...and often takes place the first weekend of the NCAA basketball tournament. That’s the single busiest weekend of the year in Vegas. Even on years when the wrestling tournament falls on the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tournament, that’s still a really busy weekend in Vegas. And the weekend before the NCAA basketball tournament starts is conference tournament weekend, and 2-3 basketball conferences play their tournaments in Vegas every year.

What do you mean lost Union Station? Admittedly, it's not as good as a few years ago since some of the restaurants closed but it's still there as far as I know.

It's a ghost town compared to the earlier NCAAs there.

I did think about this... I think there's enough capacity for both though.

Also another (selfish) reason why having it in Vegas would be great.

The idea of the NCAA wrestling championships in LV is counterintuitive to what the event is about.  Generally (but with exceptions), it is a family friendly event that is affordable and convenient to the typical Midwestern wrestling fan.  While holding it in LV is not completely unaffordable or inconvenient due to numerous flight options, there are numerous other locations that better fit with the theme of the event.

I agree (selfishly) that it would make it even better. It would actually just about be my dream weekend trip. However, I just don’t think it’s ever going to happen. Room occupancy rates in Vegas have been 98% the past few years during the opening weekend of the tournament. Even if they could pull it off the affordability argument goes out of the window...flights and rooms are going to be WAY more expensive. Plus I can tell you from personal experience that’s probably the least family friendly weekend in Vegas all year. The strip is essentially all guys who are there to drink and bet basketball with their buddies.

#1 for the highest murder rate in the US = East St. Louis

#3 is St. Louis.

That area is an absolute dump.

Vegas is not in the top 30.

2 of the top 30 with the highest "murder rate" are within 100 miles of wilkes-barr PA where yanni will be beating up on zane on monday... better alert the authorities...

statistics used to scare middle aged white people are amusing...

I would love to see it in Phoenix someday. Major city and airport, and let's not forget about the sunshine.

Many wrestling junkies get their Vegas time at the US Open, which I think is plenty. The basketball tournament comment is relevant too, as I'm sure the city goes crazy that weekend.

As a resident, I’ll say that the whole city doesn’t go crazy during March Madness; but the casinos are more busy than normal.  That said, I’d say that CES in early January is a busier time than NCAA hoops.

Well I would love to see the NCAA's come to Vegas, in fact I would also like to see some of the big International meets there as well. I saw the World's there in 2015, and it was one of the best sporting events I ever saw, ( partly because of SnyderMan knocking off Gadisov in the finals), but still. I would even love to see the World Cadets or Juniors Championships or World Cup being held there.

As a fan I like going to the U.S. Open, and not only do I get to watch some of the best wrestlers in the nation participating in that event, but the thousands of kids wrestling in the adjoining hall at the Western Regional as well.

st louis is not for the applebee's crowd... never has been... probably never will be...

and let's be honest, wrestling "fans" lean way more towards applebee's than rigazzi's...

but, whatever...

the point is, vegas is a **** hole... it smells... it is full of the worst examples of human behavior... but, it has pretty lights, cheap booze, and an applebee's in every casino...

What an idiotic post! It smells no worse than Cleveland, Memphis, London, St. Louis and Miami, all cities I have lived in. The bad human behavior is mostly from tourists who live somewhere else can probably do the same **** at home. There are 8 Applebees in town and the strip is a 4 mile long street in an area of 2.4 million. It would be a great place to hold NCAA's as evidenced by the WC a few years ago.

You haven't been to St. Louis in 20 years but for some reason suspect things haven't changed there?  Well... I've got some bad news for you.

I don't really want to keep ragging on the city.  There are a few decent spots around town (like virtually every other city in the country), it's just a horrible location to host an event like NCAA's.  The only redeeming quality it has is that they actually want the event to be held there.  Wonder why that is...

I liked STL as a host site.  I love that all of their sports venues are downtown and plenty of hotels/restaurants in walking distance.  I didn't rent a car and got to and from the airport easily on the train.  It was affordable.

Honestly I'm fine with any spot that (1) has the lodging and dining close to the venue, and (2) has easy/cheap airport access without a car.  Affordability is #3 for me but I'm fine with NYC because it's NYC and it's great in other ways.  Detroit is the only awful host city I've visited.  The hotels were all 30+ minutes away and they had no dining near the arena.

I would never miss another tournament if they made Vegas the permanent spot.  Great weather, cheap flights,  luxury hotels, outstanding food, copious beverages 24 hours a day, sports gambling, fabulous golf, brand new state of the art arena directly attached to New York, New York with 18,000 seats and tons of luxury amenities - Clapton, Hockey, and Boxing scheduled in the next few weeks.   Best place ever.   Not for the Puritans, but how much fun are they bringing to town anyway?

Family fun = Disney < 18,000 ex-wrestlers = Vegas baby.

It's not manufactured but, even though I live here, I can see how people don't like it and I'm not much of a fan. I should have toned down my rhetoric a little because that bugs me when other people do and for that I apologize as I usually like your posts. Vegas has its issues but as far as hosting an event everything is right together so even if some prices are a little higher you'll certainly save on transportation cost because you can literally walk to the arena. One of the other posters is correct that it would be really tough if it was the same weekend as the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. The town is packed with a lot of the people here being invited guests and the prices would be higher than normal. In the end it's probably not the best place as far as pricing goes or the worst but as far as everything being right together and plenty of options it's an excellent choice. It's also extremely safe on the strip so that is not a worry.

let's be honest...

i make a bold (some would say inflammatory) statement about despising vegas (because i do)... i expect a little push back... it is part of the gig... i take and give most everything with a slight wink and a nod...

but still... vegas is awful... i get why the backwards hat crowd loves it...

Just not sure Vegas has seen the level of pick-up trucks, camo overalls, and copenhagen that will show up.

vegas still has plenty of tourneys aside from NCAAs, so, nothing new there...

and come on, rednecks and backward hat types work all year in the hopes to go on a 3 day bender in vegas... the city was designed with that type of class specifically in mind...

Indeed.  That pretty much sums that up.

I'd take Vegas or St. Louis over a football stadium in Minnesota.

You just have a phobia about Wood Chippers from the movie FARGO.

Wait til you get there and discover that some of the folks really DO have that Yooper accent.
