Was Lewis over Joseph the most dominant upset at NCAAs ever?

Recommended Posts

Joseph was a 2 time defending NCAA champ who himself had knocked off a dominant NCAA champ in IMar twice, in dramatic fashion.  He came into the NCAA tournament as the #1 seed.  Mekhi Lewis was relatively unheralded at the college level, absolutely crushed Joseph 7-1 in the NCAA finals.

Given the dominance of Joseph over his career and the way Lewis dominated Joseph in the finals, was this the most dominant upset over a dominant wrestler in the NCAA finals, ever?

Tayler over Dake would have been.

Taylor never even got close to gaining control over Dake in their title match, let alone being dominant in a victory since he never beat Dake in college(or senior level).

Joseph wasn’t the 1 seed but yeah a pretty solid upset.

At 2 different points Owings led Gable by 5. It ended a 2 point match because of late escape and 2 riding time points to make it closer than it was.

No, there was nothing dominant about that win.

Gable didn't realize he was losing.

What? Im sorta brain dead right now, but are you serious?

Yes, although maybe he didn't realize by how much. He asked Mr. Perri (the ref) what the score was. He was visibly stunned when he got the answer. 14-10 iirc, but Gable had two minutes rt coming. I don't think he knew he gave up the predicament for 2 near the edge. I think he figured with RT it was tied and he'd take it into ot.

Taylor was only a freshman, although heralded. Jenkins had made the finals before so not really a shocker to see him there again.

"most dominant upset" is the thread title, so:

1. Taylor ranked 3, Bubba ranked 4 - that makes it an upset.

2. By pinfall in the 2nd period - that makes it dominant.

Freshman/senior/etc. and prior history of success doesn't really play into the thread subject of dominance in an upset.

Given the reaction after this match by most of us on this board, it was a shocker to say the least.

So, it may or may not be the 'most' dominant upset. But it clearly was a dominant upset, and IMHO I'd rank it no lower than the top 10.
