Cornell - NCAA team title, why not?

Recommended Posts

They have an elite coach in Rob Koll.

They have a legit superstar wrestler (maybe P4P best in NCAA, maybe best in the World) in Yianni.

They have a slew of AA-level talent Arujau, Chavez, Darmstadt, Dean, Honis.

They have other NCAA qualifier level guys in Tucker and Womack.

They have a superstar giant killer alum in Kyle Dake.

They have an elite RTC in the Finger Lakes RTC that boasts stud athletes like Kyle Dake, Yianni, Jordan Oliver, Gabe Dean and soon, Nashon Garrett.

Is it crazy to think they might contend for a NCAA team title in the next few years?

Not crazy. Cornell has placed second and  has had multiple top 5 finishes. One thing they have lost is an advantage in facilities as many teams have built new rooms. But Cornell can and will be in the mix in two years after YD returns from his Olympic redshirt  (perhaps with a Gold Medal around his neck).

Why not? Even the year they finished 2nd they basically under performed considering they were supposed to win it that year. For me to think they could win it ... A) they'd have to have the raw talent that screams #1 which this year they won't have OR B) they'd have to have some years of over performance that makes you believe they are about to break thru. Those years don't exist.

No shame in not winning the NCAA title. Only 1 team wins it each year, and everyone else is a bridesmaid.

Andrew Long is why not already.

Not just him. Ruth beat Lewnes. Wright won from the 9 seed while Bosak finished something like 4th. Their 125 laid an egg too. They were pre season number 1 and PSU beat them pretty easily that year, and that's still their best finish ever.

Cornell shouild be pretty good the next few years. A couple more top 5's probably. A title? I can't see it.

2019:  Vito seeded 8th, takes 4th.  Tucker seeded 9th, goes 1-2.  Yianni was Yianni.  Womack seeded 16th, goes 1-2 (loses to Hall).  Dean seeded 5th, takes 2nd.  Honis seeded 9th, takes 8th.  Sweany seeded 23rd, goes 0-2.

Three over-perform, one (Tucker) underperforms, three go more-or-less as expected, and Yianni is Yianni.

2018:  Tucker unseeded, goes 1-2.  Yianni seeded 3rd, takes 1st.  Chavez seeded 16h, takes 7th.  Womack unseeded, goes 0-2.  Dean seeded 9th, takes 8th.  Darmstadt seeded 2nd, takes 6th with a fractured vertebra. Sweany unseeded, goes 1-2.

Three over-perform, one underperforms with a major injury, three go more-or-less as expected.

By the way, in 2020-21, they will have four AAs from this or last year's roster, plus a couple of the best recruiting classes in the country.  They will have only lost Tucker and Womack, and replaced them with blue-chippers like Greg Diakomihalis, Josh Saunders, Julian Ramirez, Jacob Cardenas, Chris Foca, Lewis Fernandes, Ethan Hatcher, Colton Yapoujian.

Did you notice that the question was not "this year" but "Is it crazy to think they might contend for a NCAA team title in the next few years?"  You think that is so crazy?

Does Penn State win that year without long? Not trolling could someone legit do the math?

No they would have lost by 5 pts to Cornell assuming his stand in either DNQ or DNP, which is likely.

Long scored 18.5 pts, same # as Ruth and 1 less than David Taylor.

The OP Thread Title poses the question "Cornell - NCAA Team Title, why not?" That question implies Cornell winning an NCAA title, not merely contending for one. Even though the last line of his trolly post morphs the question to  a variance of "contend for a title", the subject line is totally trolly so once people couldn't resist the bait I responded majoritively to the trolly part.

I said they would probably get a couple of top 5's, so that imo is indeed contending. So yeah, they will contend, imo.

They won't win an NCAA title,  imo. Both questions answered.

After the 2020 Olympic year, they have a 2 year window with Vito, Yianni, Dean, and Darmstadt all in the lineup.  That's in addition to a number of blue chippers joining the squad in Ramirez, Cardenas, Foca, Saunders, Greg D, Handlovic, and Merola (and a few other names).

Adding that much firepower to a core of upperclassmen that are likely to score 60+ points on their own... of course they could win.

post olympic cornell will make a run at a title. it's not crazy to think they have a chance. even with a best-case loaded roster (yanni, max, vito, darmstadt, the solid recruiting classes finding their best weights...) they probably won't ever be the favorite though.

That national championship only cost them the sexual assault of a teammate's mother.

That’s harsh.

——

Regarding the next few years - Cornell has a shot.  Which is damn impressive.  Hoping they can do it but so much will need to fall in place.  Very little room for off performances.  Which means likelihood is low.

Going to enjoy the ride regardless.

I also think the have a shot at winning a title during the two years they should have Yianni, Vito, Dean and Darmstadt on the team together.  To win the team title they will need those 4 to be living up to expectations and the will have to develop some of the amazing talent they have coming in from the last 3 recruiting classes (meaning the 2018, 2019 & 2020 graduating years) to fill in the other 6 weights.  I would love to see them do it.

Remember that in 2012 they had three individual champs and still ended up 4th, 41.5 points behind the team champs.  It's not impossible that they could win it all, but it's a severe uphill climb due to depth.

it would be great if you would base your predictions on their current team and not previous teams with pre-determined results.
