drag it 261 Report post Posted September 12, 2019 https://gopsusports.com/news/2019/9/10/penn-state-wrestling-announces-2019-20-schedule.aspx Apologies if anyone else posted this and I missed it. I thought this was interesting -- Penn State doesn't have the Scuffle on its schedule. Having Penn State and and automatic 3-5 national champs/number one ranked guys' names on the marquee there every year was really what gave the Scuffle its juice, particularly in recent years as it lost a lot of its depth. I have mixed feelings about the dispersal of mid-season tournament competition in the last decade or so, from Midlands, to Midlands and Scuffle, to all kinds of other entrants with Cliff Keen having arguably taken over. I guess competition is good, but as a fan (particularly as a Midlands attendee) it's too bad to lose the luster off the mega holiday tournaments. KTG119 817 Report post Posted September 12, 2019 I assume some of their guys will hit opens if need be to help with NCAA tournament qualifying standards. Not a very high match count here.

Bryan 49 Report post Posted September 12, 2019 I personally don't know if there is any validity to this but the rumor has been circulating that the Sothern Scuffle may move from Chattanooga, TN to Nashville, TN. The dates would remain the same but the travel would be better for most teams that fly to the event.

Would the travel be better, given that most teams fly into the World's Busiest Airport and drive from there (about a two-hour drive, and before you ask, I've actually flown from home to Atlanta, gotten a rental car, driven to Chattanooga, covered a dual meet there, drove back to Atlanta, and then flown home, all in one day, before)? TLS62pa 47 Report post Posted September 13, 2019 Living in Chattanooga, we have direct flights from Chicago, Detroit, Philly, DC, New York, and Charlotte (not bothering to count the Dallas one for this). Granted most teams may need a connection through hubs, but I think it's hard to say Chattanooga is far out of the way. Nashville would be much more convenient for travel. However, I think what makes the Scuffle work so well since moving to Chattanooga is the level of wrestling support in the direct area and north Georgia. red blades 245 Report post Posted September 13, 2019 (edited) I wonder if this has less to do with location and more about coaches wanting to limit some of the grind / wear and tear on wrestlers. If you look at PSU's scheduling in the past few years, that seems to be the case. I do know that both Koll and Brian Smith at Mizzou switched to South Beach duals instead of the Scuffle in part because they saw the latter as a big drain on the wrestlers right before the dual meet season starts in earnest.
