USA wrestling International Tourney

Recommended Posts

What do you think it would take for a high quality international tournament to take place on USA soil? One that would give us the opportunity to see most of our rising stars against competitors from a variety of nations with full wrestlebacks. Almost like an american version of the "Yariguin".

Let me know your thoughts

First step needed, current visa situation for traveling to the US adjusted.

Second step, convince UWW that the Dave Schultz, or Farrell, are the best bets for their newly announced annual ranking series event in the Americas.

Why not make the US Open and true open. Right now it should be called the US Closed, as in closed to non-Americans. It could then be an international  ranking tournament. And it could still be a  qualifier for the US WTT.

I think the Farrell would have a better shot given how much easier NYC is to get to compared to Colorado.  Then again the Yarygin ain't exactly a quick jaunt.

Is the Farrell at the NYAC still?  It's basically a fancy YMCA right?  Could it handle they tourney if it had 3x the crowd and competitors?

it's money. the more money you offer to the winners, the better wrestlers that will show up. the issue is not how to make the tournament better (its money), the question is how to raise the money to make the tournament better.

How much money would get the best guys? Like equivalent to say a ranking event?

For some guys just covering their travel expenses would be enough, especially Americans, who already compete a ton for very little money. For others, especially international wrestlers, it would have to be as much as they make winning olympic medals. In some countries you are set for life once you win a medal so we're talking very large purses. Approaching and probably exceeding 6 figures.

At least that's what I think. Would need more input from the domestic and international athletes to be sure.
