How’s does Top 10 played out if averaged out by number of attempts?  Obviously you have to cut it off at those who had multiple World/Olympic attempts (maybe 3 or more appearances).  If not the guys with 1 gold in 1 World/Olympics ends up trumping everyone.  I’d rather see it averaged based on attempts rather than just placements to also count for the times these guys didn’t place.  More math than I plan on doing on the weekend but I’m sure someone already has the stats handy which are needed for it.

Based on this, I would rank John Smith as the greatest US wrestler of all time, at least as of now

Big Bruce by a mile. He doesn’t get enough respect here.

I hear this, but out of 13 attempts (maybe more?) he won 5 golds. Amazing for sure, but John Smith was 100% for golds (6/6) and JB is at 56% (6/9).

It just depends on your criteria. Bruce definitely gets it for longevity. For consistency it is either him or Smith. The best guy at any given point? Maybe JB (but that allows for a bunch of other guys like Cael, Monday, Kemp, etc).

Basically it boils down to how you define best. I like using "best credentials" as that is as normalized as you can get in my opinion when comparing eras. With that criteria, I have it:

1. Smith

2. Bruce

3. Burroughs, but a gold in 2020 at a minimum bumps Burroughs to 2nd.

4. Snyder

For best at one time, Dan Gable should be in the conversation too

I see what you mean, looking at Russia's list:

Rank Name Score Finishes
#1 Buvaisar Saitiev 144 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1

Totally impressive, but the 8th and 9th place finishes thrown in there would be nice to see for reference.

Isn't JB 5 golds out of 9 attempts with 3 golds and a DNP?  That's 0.556 and getting closer to Bruce every year recently.  Bruce wrestled at the world championships/Olympics 15 times winning 5 golds, 4 silvers, and 4 bronze, with 2 DNPs (1982 and 1991).  That's 0.333, but I wouldn't knock his percentage when comparing to someone who has the same or fewer titles as making the team 15 straight years is a crazy accomplishment.

What’s the scoring criteria? At a quick glance, it looks like it should emphasize gold a little more

Looks like 16, 12, 10 which is collegiate tournament team scoring with 8 place winners.

Thanks. That’s fair. I just think it seems like we have some 3x champs that are lower than they should be. Probably no best way to do it mathematically though.

I have all the respect in the world for Big Bruce.

He participated in 4 Olympics, and had two golds, one silver and one bronze

He also has 9 world medals, including 3 golds.  These are amazing accomplishments.

However, I just rank John Smith, with 6 total golds, including two Olympic golds higher.

This does not mean I don't respect Bruce, I have the utmost respect for him.

Great list Jersey Wrestling.  You did short one of your Jersey guys though.  The Great Chris Campbell should be 1,2, & 3.  You did not include the Olympic Bronze he won in 1992 at 36 years old.  That would put him at 38 pts tied for 17

No he isn’t. He said men’s freestyle. You are right if it was both genders/all styles.

Post says that but the website he links to does not.   It says "Top Wrestlers by World and Olympic Medals" and "World and Olympic Medals by Year" with out any mention of style or sex.

Chris / Christopher like Rick / Richard Sanders is one who is listed twice on the list dividing the accomplishments. Yep, move ‘em up.
