That team had Jason Ness, Zach Sanders, Dustin Schlatter etc and the incoming recruiting class had some combination of Tony Nelson, Kevin Steinhaus, Jake Dietchler, Cody Yohn. Eggum's had 1 recruit as head coach in the last 4 years that has AA and it was Gable. Mitch Mckee was a J recruit I beleive. Hard to believe and they currently have zero RS freshman to write home about. He's had a few transfer in and AA however. tommygun 52 Report post Posted November 19, 2019 I doubt AD Coyle is even looking at the wrestling program and the possibility of making a change. He should be at this point.
Housebuye 2,437 Report post Posted November 19, 2019 I’m not totally clear on the hate, but you know the program much better than I do. Looks to me like they will end the season top 10 with 3-5 AAs

It will be even worse next season. Two top recruits in next years class just visited multiple times and both recently committed to Missouri and Northwestern. goheels1812 676 Report post Posted November 19, 2019 (edited) 22 hours ago, Gopher82 said: Has anyone else noticed how far Gopher wrestling has fallen since Eggum took over 4 years ago? The current roster is possibly the worst roster the Gophers have had in 30 year's. The current recruiting is terrible. The top recruit from last season "Devin Winston" is transferring. As coach he is ultimately responsible for his wrestlers actions, so he should take some accountability for the Gable Steveson incident and he was the top assistant coach during the Xanex scandal. Oh and he was the guy that told Lizak to take bottom in the championship match. He should have been fired on the spot for that call. The entire staff should have been let go but wrestling isn't important. Let's now backup to recruting. Mark Hall, Brady Berge, Taylor Venz, Seth Gross, Daniel Kerkvliet, Patrick Kennedy, Ryan Sokal are all top recruits that have left the state during Eggums time as coach or top assistant coach. The Gophers have 2 wrestlers, yes 2 wrestlers that can help win a NCAA championship. Brayton Lee and Gable Steveson if he ever wrestles again for the Gophers. Mitch McKee too but he's graduating this season. Here is some former top recruits that have not lived up to the hype since joining the Gophers. Owen Webster, Bobby Steveson, Ryan Thomas, Jake Short, Tommy Thorn, Jake Allar, Nathan Rose and the list goes on and on. Patrick McKee is way overrated as well. He did however help secure funds for a new facility that he said was needed for recruiting but that hasn't been shown true yet. The Gophers lost to Rider Friday night. They need rid themselves of the nepotism on staff and hire a new outsider. That’s disappointing to hear that Devin Winston is transferring, I hadn’t heard that yet. He left Coleman Scott and unc high and dry pretty late in the recruiting process to commit to Eggum. Now unc has a gaping hole at 184 and Winston could most likely be starting for the heels right now. Oh well. powershouse 106 Report post Posted November 19, 2019 J Rob stuck around too long. He shouldn’t have asked for or been given that last extension. Program hit bottom when J Rob’s team lost to Indiana- at home!I think Eggum/Becker/Brandvold make a heck of a staff and they seem to be moving in the right direction but still have a long way to go. Coyle is the best AD MN has had since Joel Maturi. Maturi May have been more supportive of non revenue sports (although I have seen Coyle at wrestling, soccer and gymnastics events) but Coyle is proving to be much better at managing revenue sports. 1 WF89 reacted to this

I agree and disagree. Eggum will be finishing his 4th season this season and it's very likely unless Brayton Lee AA which is very possible he will have only recruited and coached 1 AA, Gable. How can you be happy with those results after 4 year's? And who on this team besides Brayton might suddenly AA next season? This answer is most likely nobody. Imagine Carl or Tom going 4 year's recruiting 1 AA wrestler. Edited November 19, 2019 by Gopher82 1 southend reacted to this

Gantry 1,872 Report post Posted November 19, 2019 (edited) The "4 years recruiting 1 AA" thing to me is misleading. Eggum's interim title was removed on January 2017 - so he hasn't been the official head coach three years yet. Also by January all the elite recruits are gone and nobody was going to be able to recruit or keep recruits in the middle of that xanax/jrob scandal. I honestly don't remember how many recruits left or got but to me he gets a mulligan for the class of 2017 recruits. It was a total disaster and you can't blame Eggum for not bringing in elite talent that year. Dealt an impossible hand, maybe others disagree here. That leaves the class of 2018 non-redshirting freshman recruits which he got an AA from Steveson out of. The 2019 recruits and 2018 redshirts haven't finished their freshman year and have had zero chance to AA. AA Danny Zilverberg was unranked.
MNRodent 228 Report post Posted November 20, 2019 Totally disagree with the criticisms directed towards Eggum. He has had to deal with some bad choices by some young men, and has made the best of some tough situations. Even with some mediocre recruiting classes they are coming off a 4th in Big Ten (just 6 pts behind Iowa) and 8th at NCAAs. Some of you are overreacting to the ugly Rider match, which was lightning in a bottle for the Broncs. Gantry 1,872 Report post Posted November 20, 2019 (edited) The stat specifically doesn't give him credit for "Jrob's AAs" like McKee during that time, so you can't have it both ways. If you want to extend his tenure saying he was really running things then he gets credit for all the AAs and that stat is invalid.
