Luke Pletcher

Recommended Posts

People love to talk about Pletcher not scoring points and winning close matches but that's 2 years ago Pletcher.  Last year Luke had more offense and this year up a weight he has looked fantastic!  A variety of nice leg attacks from the handfight/tie ups and great re-attacks and go behinds.  His positioning has always been great but now he score off his own attacks and his opponents.  His attack rate is way up at 141.  I'm very interested to see how he matches up with Lee but he looks to be a cut above the rest of the pack at 141.

Spencer Lee is short, even for 125, and is the best top man in the country. It’s harder but not impossible.

He is short but not squatty. I am not disagreeing with you, because i had the same thought about length being necessary for being good on top....but maybe he just can't have short arms or something.

It seems like Pletcher and Chas Tucker never really turn anybody. Are back points a problem for stocky guys. Did Molinaro and Tomasello have the same problem?

Molinaro was always tough on top ,even in high school he won 3 state titles and had 1 maybe 2 takedowns total in those 3 matches..being tough on top helped him AA as freshman with a 500 record

you are missing the point of the conversation by a lot.

Yes, he is. He also does not seem to understand that height is a relative phenomenon.  KTG, try this: Bo Nickal and Jason Nolf were both too short to play in the NBA (Bo maybe was tall enough to play point guard) but they were both tall compared to wrestlers in their weight class. Pletcher, by contrast, is short compared to the other wrestlers in his weight class. He is not shorter than all of them, but he is shorter than most.

Hope that helps.

With strong March finishes (2nd 2x Big Ten, 4th 2x NCAA) at that stacked weight class the last two years he's been terrific all year so far -- and is a terrific guy, too, nice interview after the match (behind paywall), https://www.flowrestling.org/events/6562242-2019-cliff-keen-las-vegas-collegiate-wrestling-invitational/videos?playing=6609858

Pletcher is having a great year, but he still wrestles more close matches than your typical #1 ranked wrestler, especially against average competition.

His bonus % is almost double what it was last year.

And the only regular decisions he’s had that were not against top 10 guys are against Stricker from Harvard and Baughman 2x.

Double of 34% is 68% not 57%.

Relative terminology to his own results won't work. Zahid, Hall, and Moore are all over 80%. Hell every other (active) #1 has a higher bonus percentage.
