Best wrestler names

When my wife was pregnant with our first child in 2008, we made a list of 100 names.  For boys, I specifically suggested (half-jokingly) that we should brainstorm manly names that would intimidate his wrestling opponents.  Some names were cherry picked for consideration to this discussion :).

  • Cannon (baseball - strong arm)
  • Canyon
  • Catcher (baseball)
  • Charger (action)
  • Diesel (thinking about semi trucks)
  • Edge (he's sharp, he has an edge over his opponents)
  • Fierce (tuff)
  • Furious ("Fury" for short)
  • Nash (teeth)
  • Pierce
  • Rocco (rock tuff)
  • Shute ("You can't hold your mud.  You're a bleeder and I like to see blood.")
  • Steele (hard metal)
  • Tuff (tough)
  • Wyatt or Weston or Wesley (country name and the initials would spell 'WAR')

Going through the exercise was too much fun.  Some friends added more considerations.

  • Colonel
  • Immortal
  • Maddog
  • Mufasa
  • Tenacious ('Tenac' for short)
  • Ravishing

After having two daughters, I was able to make use of the list for my son.  Ultimately, I broke a multi-generation tradition of using 'Allen' as the middle-name and went with Bronson Steele.  If he develops a passion for wrestling, his name on the wrestling bracket could list Bronson, Bronco, Bronx, or Steele.

'Catcher' is a manly name? Au contraire mon ami!

Probably kill the spelling but there was a kid named Blu Wahle a while back--no fish.

Blu also wrestled for UNO.  His little brothers I think also wrestled for Coach Denney, but at Maryville.  Blu was a roommate of one of my good friends.  Name is pronounced "wall", though.

At nationals one year one of the wrestlers season match records indicated an opponent named "Sucha Mann."  We immediately began kidding the coach and calling him out about this manly "opponent," but I guess his name was pronounced "Soosha Mon" and not "Such-a-Man."

I had scope creep and put in a couple names for baseball.  I agree that catcher is not manly.  Also note that you might be careful with what names you share.  From that list, my old schoolmates (facebook friends) later used each of these boy names: cannon, canyon, steele, wyatt, and weston.

I believe you are right!  He came up on the season bout record of a Simon Fraser wrestler, so we gave Mike Jones a hard time about it (all in good fun--Mike is one of the great guys in the sport and he's got a pretty damn good sense of humor; one of my all-time favorite guys I coached with/against).  We said, "I don't know if this guy's any good, but he's such a man!"

(and had the high school match of the century against Metcalf)

are you talking the dapper dan classic match?  was a good match but wouldn't call it anywhere near the match of the century

It's my favorite...and i think it was the best singular match for technique and excitement, but you're probably right that there were others which were amazing and for bigger stakes.

So "Real Woods" will catch everyone off guard the first time?

How would you feel about wrestling a boy named "Sue?"

Quote

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong

NYS high school champ from the early 80’s was named Matt King

Holy blast from the past. I remember watching him as a kid. He was very good. From Canandaigua, NY (a little Southeast of Rochester). His brother Marty was also very good.
