Damian Hahn at SDSU

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen any posts about Hahn's SDSU team, but they have looked great since Christmas. Their last loss was 18-16 to Cornell, before beating Duke, Michigan St, Old Dominion, UNI, and Wyoming. I am excited to see how they do against Iowa St in a couple days.

Truth is that I had sympathy for Hahn. I was worried his first head coaching job wouldn't be a success as Bono left and took his best wrestler with him along with a few de-commits. Boy was a wrong. SDSU cannot be an easy school to recruit to. In N'east Nebraska, N'west Iowa, S'East South Dakota, and S' west Minnesota, the population is a rounding error for many states, plus there are just a couple good teams to recruit against if a stud does come out.

Good on Hahn! I'm really happy to see SDSU stay relevent.

Hahn picked up right where Bono left off.  Everything is looking good for the Jackrabbits. They're competitve.  They have young talent (5 freshmen in the lineup).  Sloan will be a multiiple time AA.  They've got Devos in redshirt who looks every bit the real deal as well.

Only downside is Hahn's Class of 2020 is very thin because of the late start that their staff had.  Expect them to put together a strong class of 2021, which already includes 1 top 25 guy committed.

Only 2 starters will graduate from this year’s team (Pohlmeyer and Z Carlson)

Hunter Marko is transferring in and should compete to fill in for Pohlmeyer or Price and Clay Carlson could move up and Daniel Kimball, a redshirting freshman could slide in at 133.

I’d guess that Martin Mueller will qualify for a med shirt, he could go 174 next year and allow Cade King to redshirt or compete for the 184 spot with Nick Casperson.

Also redshirting is Spencer Trenary, a mammoth heavyweight who could be real good when he matures into his body.

He's doing a great job - practically started from scratch. You are correct - recruiting has got to be tough. Hard to sell SD in the winter...or any season really. In the ladnscape of D1 wrestling I always like to see the 2nd and 3rd tier team make gains so there is more to talk about...and my team is in that predicament.

Damian has a good staff under him.  With Cody on staff they have a really good in for the Iowa kids.  Damian and Chris with the Minnesota kids and hopefully a few that Damian can pluck from out east.  Cam has insight on the MI,OH,IN areas so there is a really good mix for recruiting.    Oh ya and they are really good coaches and it sure looks like the team is having fun.  The whole staff really seem like the guys you would want your kids around to grow not only on the mat but also to become great young men off the mat.

I'd love to see him get a real high level recruit at 174-197 and see what he can do with him.

Especially when you consider that Simaz, Bosak and Dean weren’t considered real high level recruits.

Exactly. How many high level recruits think like that though? Here is a guy who has shown to do an awful lot with little. What could I do with him as a coach?

Just a matter of time Before Hahn takes over the Minnesota Program...Damion would run circles around Egghead!

LOL....it wasn't that long ago that lots of people were saying that Eggum would be a better coach than J Rob and couldn't wait to see what he could do :D

Yeah I’m calling bull on that one.

Hey, go back and read the forums just prior to Eggum getting the job.  Here's one link I found after only a minute or so of searching.

I read the thread and didn’t find one person saying Eggum might be a better coach than JRob.

Maybe my 55 year old brain invented that part. But there were several people in that thread recommending him for the job, none the less. Plus, that's just one thread and I can't be bothered to canvass all threads mentioning "Eggum".

Recruiting for him is easy. He dangles "Free Admission" to the grave of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickcock and the kids flock to the program.
Free admission to Casino's in Deadwood and Harley rides at Sturgis...

Doesn't get much easier than that.

And Brookings is only 335 miles from Wall Drug.

Admit it, you have Eggum on your face :)

He’s done pretty well considering the damage Thorn, Lizak, Early and Krone did to the program. Without a solid personality in Eggum to step in after JRob took the fall, who knows what might have happened to the program.
