maligned 528 Report post Posted February 9, 2020 (edited) Parris dominates Cassioppi last night to check one more "deficiency" off of his resume (sort of) because of having lost badly to him in freestyle pre-NCAA career. It's well documented that he's got a world class takedown with his fireman's, but I saw a few things in last night's match (as representative of his folk style season, really) that I like for his international future: 1) He can shoot almost at will without ever being in trouble against big, strong guys. He can maneuver back out if necessary or work to his patented fireman's and dump as a re-shot when it's there. 2) He can defend a very tough snatch single or snatch high-c, which he'll face often against top competition. Last night, he twice went to the wizzer/near ankle grab. The first time, he limp-armed out and spun behind. The second time, Cassioppi pressed in to defend the limp arm, so he reached across and attacked the opposite ankle to take him down and follow up with his turk and the fall. He will find those same two sequences very useful on the international mat. 3) His attack rate and gas tank are top notch. He attacked non-stop last night, yet is somehow very relaxed and under control between sequences and scrambles. I'm not sure any top heavyweight in the world has his gas tank with it not being emphasized nearly as much outside the U.S. I anticipate him getting into some high-scoring, high-output types of matches down the road against international guys. He's obviously got the makeup to push through and come out on top in those types of matches. I think Parris will have enough holes defensively on the feet and in par terre to be vulnerable to a handful of guys at the Trials, but I'm increasingly optimistic that he's developing into something beyond an NCAA force. spladle08 1,092 Report post Posted February 9, 2020 I'm increasingly optimistic that he's developing into something beyond an NCAA force. Absolutely by 2022 maybe 23. I'd favor him to be our rep. I'm sure he's not too far off Gable as is and with a few years to add to his arsenal and confidence I could see him being the man to beat (I assume Gable is MMA bound as well).... Simply: I'm optimistic he is a better prospect than Gwiz was, and hell Gwiz has a couple world bronze medals. He could be a force in the future, as could Cass. With Geno and Agkul likely dropping in dominance over the next few years and our young crop getting experience, I think our chances to medal increase over time. But Zare is there (dont come at me about that pin) and who knows what other countries have monsters coming on the scene. I think whichever young Heavyweight grabs the starting spot will always be a threat for a medal and that in itself is "a force" (as you mentioned) but I still dont know if we have that person developing I could see winning the whole dance. *PS everything you typed was spot on. Really good post. Hopefully he wrecks the world
Coach_J 2,180 Report post Posted February 9, 2020 Good analysis. He showed tremendous agility with the ankle whizzer, particularly the first time. The international guys will be a lot leaner and more technically sound than Cass though. 1 spladle08 reacted to this

wrestlingnerd 2,999 Report post Posted February 9, 2020 Parris's rate of improvement is more impressive than where he is now. I don't see him as a big factor for 2020. I don't see that dump working on the top senor heavies and his shots were OK not great. He capitalized on Cass mistakes more than he took it to Cass. The dump he works from there is nice, but he shouldn't make a habit of getting stuck there. Some of those shots against Cass were sloppy and he will pay for it against the best in the world. I'm interested to see how is defense holds up against Gable. Cass did not test it whatsoever. 1 wrestlingnerd reacted to this

nhs67 1,984 Report post Posted February 10, 2020 That dump worked on Zare last year. The same Zare that techfalled the US #1 Gwiazdowski. I imagine some of the best will let it be hit on them as well. Even when defending it, it is difficult with how strong Parris is. He is an absolute brute.
