maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Hancock rolls the Venezuelan after struggling with him a bit last week. He'll have an easy final pool match and enter the semi's as a significant favorite over probably the solid, but currently hobbled Mejia of Honduras.
maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Hafizov a couple matches away and Coon three matches away in probably a winner-take-all quarterfinal.
MPC 14 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 And it was just announced that no spectators will be at the tournament beginning tomorrow (Saturday) https://wrestling.ca/update-on-the-pan-american-olympic-qualification-tournament/
maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Hafizov with a huge tech and he's on to the semi's. Pimentel of the DR falls in an upset pin to the Mexican, meaning Hafizov is really the favorite to qualify the weight now. Great run brewing. 1 spladle08 reacted to this
spladle08 1,083 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Sure don't like the lack of success from the great AJ Coon, from World Silver to can't score against anyone

spladle08 1,083 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 I should've kept dogging on him he would've won... Coon Drops it 3-
maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Acosta Fernandez holds on and wins 3-2. Coon almost pulls off a fluke win after the 2-point caution score because of Acosta hyperextending Coon's arm twice 1 spladle08 reacted to this

He had an all-time, one in a million draw that day, facing none of the top 9 or 10 guys in the world until the final. He wrestled well the day he medaled, but it's clearly established that he doesn't beat guys of Acosta Fernandez' caliber, sadly. maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Acosta is such a monster, by the way. It shouldn't be humanly possible to look significantly bigger than Coon, but somehow he does. 1 spladle08 reacted to this

Yeah I knew he had some easy wins, but I guess the idea was: coming straight from college to the podium, might be only the beginning, with years to "refine" his technique without the distraction of Folk, you'd think he'd be continuously competitive, but it seems like he takes 3 steps back yearly. He's much more technical than our typical big guys at this point in their careers. 1 spladle08 reacted to this

maligned 528 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Wow..Rau with a hard-fought comeback win, 4-4. Hancock wins easily in his last pool match to seal his spot as the 1 seed coming from his pool into the semi's. The semi's for our five guys line up like this: 60kg: Hafizov vs. Gurria Vigueras of Mexico (2nd in Pan Am's last year facing a fairly weak half draw) 67kg: Sanchez vs. Lopez Salcedo of Mexico 77kg: Smith vs. Pena Flores of Cuba 87kg: Rau vs. Cousin Otomuro of Jamaica 97kg: Hancock vs. Mejia of Honduras
