He was definitely better in my opinion. Caldwell was pretty awesome also, just think Martin was super good. 1. NCAA champion over 3 time champ and hodge winner Bo Nickal. 2. Runner up to said Bo Nickal. 3. Dominant undefeated regular season with a 3rd place finish. 4. 5th place finish behind Nickal, Dean, Dudley and Brooks. Those are 4 really awesome seasons and I just don’t think Caldwell quite matches up, although they’re close.

Caldwell wrestled as true freshman and he didn’t go to high school at a blair or Bergan Catholic , wrestled at Rahway a football school then went to nc state who hadn’t had an AA in 10 years starts right away and made the quarters before losing to the top seed, then lost to Jaggers in the blood round, as a sophomore took 5th in probably the toughest weight class in history, finished behind Metclef, bubba Jenkins, Burroughs, Curella..he beat ncaa champ O’Conner for 5th and finished ahead of schaletter and Palmer as jr. he won, beat metclaf in one of the most shocking final upsets ever at the time then blew out his shoulder roller blading his senior year, but like I said if he didn’t get hurt no one was beating him his senior year Kyle dake included

Tough for me to unsee him losing to max dean and multiple times to Sammy brooks ,the rest of the guys on the list aren’t really losing to guys like that..I agree Martin was amazing at moments but sometimes he would lay an egg, like getting majored by Nickal with 1 second left in the dual of century in which his team ended up losing by 1...it was things like that why I left him off the top 10 originally
cem5202 28 Report post Posted March 18, 2020 (edited) I've seen threads like this a couple times and no one ever tackles PA. Is it that there's too many? I didn't really start following college wrestling until I was in college (2007) so my knowledge doesn't go back far enough. Anyone willing to give it a go? Off the top of my head I can name a few I know are probably in the running... Carlton Haselrig, Zain, Kolat, Ed Ruth, Nolf... Based on what has been listed, I think Oklahoma has a strong case for best top 2 or 3, but I am not sure PA beats OH on that measure, certainly not if you consider top 2 only and number of titles won.
