Extra year solution

Don't they sometimes give a redshirt to a wrestler who gets a season ending injury?  Maybe make people apply for it?

Yes.  But The season ending injury must happen in the first half of the season and you must have compete in less than a third of allowable contests.

It was impossible to qualify for the NCAA tournament and meet the requirements.

This was the idea behind spring sports getting it and winter sports not getting it.

Thank you,      How about strange times call for strange solutions?

The rule book actually clearly lays out how to handle these situations when you look at all of the policies and how they are applied in concert.

There is a rule regarding athletes missing out on participation due to unforeseen events (where they give examples being floods or hurricanes).

The situation was handled exactly how I expected it to be handled because of the way it was handled was consistent with the rule book which had been written to handle things like this.

The rules don’t really have anything to do with how these events impact fans.  I know I a lot of people are taking a view of how they are missing out on getting to see a championship this year but this isn’t about them.

The most basic rule at play here is about what constitutes a season.  And does a school or the association need to provide a post season opportunity to athletes to have offered a season?

Let’s have some other examples:

—A team is at the end of their season and the school decides to cancel the remainder of the season and take away the post season from the team.  Would the athletes on that team be given another year?

No.  Harvard cancelled their men’s soccer season in 2016 over athletes on the team ranking the attractiveness of women’s soccer players.

—A team could qualify for the NCAA tournament.  The school then decides to impose a post-season ban because they had recruiting violations a few years ago and they don’t want prospective recruits to not consider them for fear of a future post season ban.  Do athletes on the team get the year back?  Can they sue the school for taking away their opportunity to a post season where they could improve their market value as a future pro with a good post season performance?

No.  This happens all the time, especially in basketball.

—An athlete qualifies for the NCAA championship but the coach makes an error in entering the athlete for the event and so he isn’t entered into the NCAA championship.  Does the athlete get his year back?

No. This happened with a track runner who qualified for the NCAAs and was one of the better athletes in the event.  His coach made an error when registering athletes for what events they would enter at the NCAAs and the athlete was left home as a result.  The athlete didn’t get the season back.

The athletes were provided with a season. They were able to compete all year.  All athletes burned any opportunity for a redshirt.  They competed in their national qualifiers which is a post season event.

It is unfortunate.  And a shame for athletes to miss out on the opportunity.  But it isn’t any different than other athletes who miss out on the opportunity for things outside their control.

How about if you competed and didn't rs but had one, you can exchange it for 2020 second semester and recredit attached status?

No.

The season was completed.  The decision has been made.  Time to move on.

The whole logistics of saving next season is not totally in our control.  Granted if we have people following CDC guidelines and not thinking this is "phantom ****"  we can flatten the curve,  but right now we have morons leaving their house because they think pickle relish and Copenhagen is necessity for living.  We have to rely on everyone from every background to do the right things to keep the spread of disease down.  In all due respect,  we have too many family trees with no branches out there for me to carry faith in our fellow humans.

This virus may be Nature's way of making us aware of the defect of universal selfishness.
