Ryan Davis- National Prep Champion and Cadet Freestyle Champ before transferring to Blair. 2X Beast, 2X Ironman Champ. Was ranked #1 at 145 his senior year on the same team as Mark Perry. He defeated 2 future D1 all Americans in High School (Eckloff and Kocher)

Patrick Bond- Won everything and anything in High School and was included in that top tier of recruits for the class of 2005 which included Nickerson, Metcalf and Schlatter

Mario Mason- #1 ranked 140 pounder in the country as a Junior

Eric Medina- #1 ranked 152 pounder in the country as a junior

Ben Ashmore

CP Schlatter

All five were ranked # 1 for some part of their careers. No AAs as far as I recall

I don’t think Mason AA’d, but he was a 3x NQ and then wrestled for awhile on the Senior level.  I think he also runs a kids club and even recently launched a wrestling shoe company.

Agree with Medina (particularly for Willie’s thing which was slightly different although I didn’t see the list), I think he HEW.

Not sure if its been said but Dylan Carew from Iowa City West. He was a top recruit, fargo champ, and I thought he was a sure thing natty champ contender, but he went to Iowa and never really even saw the mat because of constant knee injuries.

B.J. Clagon. 2x NJ champ, 3x finalist. Top 5 recruit. Freshman AA. And pffft...

He made the quarters and blood round as a sophomore and junior, his senior year  he smoked Pantaleo at the all star early in the season but the the weight cut got to him and he ended up 3rd in EWLs and didn’t qualify

for christ sake Cejudo never won Reno TOC. he got beat by two Easton guys who never did anything (one of which was jordan oliver's brother, josh)

yes, Henry accomplished incredible things at a young age, but 1) you wouldn't have known that from his HS career and 2) he literally didn't participate in college.

This is nuts.  It is a woulda shoulda coulda thread, so of course he didn't wrestle in college.  The guy won senior nationals in HS.  I can't think of anyone else that accomplished that.  He lost to some dude at a high level tournament a few years after starting wrestling and that cancels everything he did three years after that?  LOL

I saw the All Star Classic match and watched BJ since he was a HS sophomore. I think his problem was he smoked more than Pantaleo.

I’ve heard that before about him but still an AA ,with  2 blood round appearances is a hell of a career

I went to school at Iowa at the same time as Blasco and Billy Murphy and legend has it they had a sit down meeting with Tom Brands to try and convince him they should be able to not only smoke pot but do it before matches because it helped them wrestle.

Worth a shot, I guess.

That would be a tough sell.

Daniel Frishkorn, 4th at NCAA's as a freshman then had a career ending illness?

Matt Grice from Okla, 4x state champ, had a motorcycle accident after his senior year of HS ad was never the  same

His college career was not a total bust but I expected to see more from Mario Mason in college.  A fair amount of Blair alums on this thread -- I would also throw the Shanaman brothers in this category.

Ben Peterson won two NCAA titles, as well as Olympic gold.  Mike Zadick won neither NCAAs nor a world title.

Not sure if the OP meant great HS wrestlers whose college career was unfulfilled. Or college wrestlers bitten by injury bug preventing greatness.

Either way, Troy Nickerson & Troy Letters shouldn't be mentioned in this category.

T Nick went 4-3-2-1 (not in that order) despite being bitten by injury bug.

Letters went 2-1-3-dnp. His Sr year was marred by injury. Never forget EIWA finals where he was injured and down a point to Anceravage of Cornell.

He stood for about 30 seconds as time ran out as he had nothing left to give. Was very sad.

Mark and Randy Payne from Sidney, NY high school (late 60s) and then Pitt.  Both great wrestlers, not much as students.  Both dismissed from Pitt for grades, behavior, partying, etc.  Randy was 2nd at 126 at NCAAs as a freshman, first year freshmen were eligible.  Mark was older, maybe better, but never got past freshman year at Pitt.  What could have been...
