Questions about Stanford's lineup for 2021 season

Recommended Posts

With Stanford returning at least 7 of their 10 starters from 2020 for the 2021 season I'm wondering what Stanford fans think will happen given the fact that Stanford had both Requir van der Merwe and Jaden Abas at 149 lbs this past season.  Do one of those two move up to 157 lbs?  If so does that mean Tyler Eischens also moves up from 157 lbs to 165 lbs.  And if so does Shane Griffith then move up to 174 lbs?

Second question is who do Stanford wrestling fans see as the probable starter for Stanford for the 2021 season at 133 lbs?  Dalton Young - who WrestleStat has ranked # 119 at 133 lbs?

My GUESS as to Stanford's probable lineup for the 2021 season would be the following.  Tell me what you think is incorrect - if you would please:

125 lbs - # 26 rankedJackson DiSario - True Sophomore (21-9) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 125 lbs

133 lbs - # 119 ranked Dalton Young - RS Junior (8-3)

141 lbs - # 7 ranked Real Woods - RS Sophomore (19-1) - 2020 PAC 12 champion at 141 lbs

149 lbs - # 38 ranked Requir van der Merwe - RS Senior (10-6) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 149 lbs (2019 PAC 12 champion) OR # 25 ranked Jaden Abas - RS Freshman (23-4)

157 lbs - # 48 ranked Tyler Eischens - RS Sophomore (21-9) OR Requir van der Merwe (see 149 lbs above) OR Jaden Abas (see 149 lbs above)

165 lbs - # 4 ranked Shane Griffith - RS Sophomore (28-0) - 2020 PAC 12 champion at 165 lbs OR Tyler Eischens (see 157 lbs above)

174 lbs - # 113 ranked Jared Hill - RS Senior (5-7) OR # 69 ranked (at 184 lbs) Karmon Foster - RS Junior (15-10) OR Shane Griffith (see 165 lbs above)

184 lbs - # 63 Judah Duhm - RS Senior (0-0) - Stanford's starter in 2019 (PAC 12 runner-up at 184 lbs in 2019) OR Jared Hill OR Karmon Foster (see 174 lbs above)

197 lbs - # 19 ranked Nathan Traxler - RS Senior (20-5) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 197 lbs

285 lbs - # 103 ranked Hayden Maley - True Junior (5-2) - Stanford's HWY starter in 2019

Is Dominick Mandarino still around? I remember him being really solid for them at 157 2 years ago and splitting starts with Paul Fox?

I think Abas wrestles wherever he wants,  van der Merwe is solid but I don't think he challenges Jaden after a year in the room.  So I'm guessing Abas at 49 and the best man between Eishens and van Der Merwe for 157.

I wondered about Mandarino at the beginning of last season but he was not on the Stanford roster this past season.  So I'm assuming he's done - despite the fact that he was only a True Sophomore for the season before last (2018-2019).

Dominick Mandarino profile from 2019 season

As opposed to Judah Duhm who WAS listed on the Stanford roster all season long (but did not compete).

Mandarino's last match wrestling for Stanford was in February of 2019 when he lost 2-1 to # 2 ranked Tyler Berger of Nebraska in the Stanford vs. Nebraska dual (at 157 lbs).

It would be great for Stanford if he made it back on the roster for next season but I tried searching for him on the internet and found NOTHING recent about him at all.   I have no idea what became of him since February of 2019.  Berger, of course, placed 2nd at the 2019 NCAA tournament and 3rd at the 2018 NCAA tournament and 5th at the 2017 NCAA tournament.

What about Colbey Harlan? Ca. state runner-up as a senior and started @ 184 as a true for the Cardinal. I believe he had an offseadon knee injury and did not wrestle any this year. I would take him over any other 184 on their roster.

I agree with a lot of what's being said here.  A few nuggets:

1.  I think Young is done...nagging injuries kept him sidelined all year and not sure he'll compete again.  In my mind, that would seem to mean 133 would go to Luciano Arroyo or  incoming frosh Jason Miranda from Poway.  Hope that's not the case - Young was a scrapper.

2.  Agreed that 149 belongs to Abas.  Like Young, van der Merwe was so banged up this year (and last) that I see him fading.  Hope I'm wrong...the kid had so much potential, but I just don't see it happening.  After seeing their team wrestle this year, I don't see a healthy van der Merwe beating Eischens either.  Again, I'm not in their room, so could be wrong.

3. I'm sure the Stanford coaches are wishing Griffith would bulk up and move up a weight class.  Their 174/184 hole has been going on for years now.  They've got a log jam in their middleweights...would be helped immensely if someone could get big enough to help them at 174/184.

4. Agreed on Harlan/Duhm...both good options at 184 but where have they been?

5. Maley is their only option at HWT so I'm sure they are praying he stays healthy.

6. Pretty sure Mandarino is done although I'm told he is still a Stanford student, so he has not looked to wrestle elsewhere.

Thanks as always for serving as the Pac-12 godfather, Bronco!

Thanks for the feedback Hey Now.

No offense intended but I'm hoping you are mistaken about Young.  I know he had injury problems as he didn't wrestle at all beyond November last year.  But I think Young would be their best option at 133 lbs for next season (rather than Arroyo or the true freshman) UNLESS DiSario moves up to 133 lbs and Ashton starts at 125 lbs.

As to Harlan and Duhm it seems odd to me that when you do a comparison between those two on WrestleStat WS predicts Harlan wins 9-6 over Duhm. - yet their three common opponents from 2019 are Bob Coleman of Oregon State (2019 PAC 12 champ at 184), Willem DeBoer of Cal Poly and Dom Ducharme of CSUB and Harlan lost all three of those matches whereas Duhm beat Ducharme and DeBoer and lost 4-2 to Coleman in the 2019 PAC 12 championship match.

If young can stay healthy and stay down at 133 he is solid. He’s wrestled 26 matches in 3 years with injuries limiting him all 3 years. Hope the kid can get on track.
